I decided to switch out all the brake and gear cables on a winter commuter a couple of years ago. Having never done it before, I assumed it was like wiring electric's, ie you cut through the housing and kinda feel when to stop so as not to cut the cable inside. After destroying all my new cables, and a couple of the old ones I had tried to reinstall in desperation. I gave up and drove to a bike shop to pick up some more. The look on the guys face, when I explained everything, was classic. I dont go there anymore.
I reckon any feckwit could make the same mistake. But it takers a special type of feckwit like me to make it 5 or 6 times in a row :)
Anyway, despite my inability to reconise my own mistakes, my first outing on the fixed I have built up, was a 55km trip along coastal roads.
I found it to be a nice intro into fixed riding (nice and quite). Although I convinced myself that every sound my bike made was a warning that the wheels are about to implode.
