One of my best mates went to Chernobyl in 2002/3 to work on this Documentary:
http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/chernobylheart/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396959/
They were the first western film crew allowed into the actual site - he has some pretty gnarly stories about it, and the shit he saw making the film has pretty much fucked him up for life.
They ran in to serious problems with the local authorities when out there, despite having government permission to go in, and several of the crew got radioactive poisoning.
If you can find it, watch the documentary, its incredibly hard going and very disturbing, but lifechanging shit.

Gem.... although Chernobyl is in the Ukraine.
there is no 'the' before Ukraine.
My gfs mom told me off for like an hour because of that. -

It sould be called Ukrainia anyway...
Austrians come from Austria, therefore Ukranians come from Ukrania.

My friend also worked on this, Return to Chernobyl - they actually go inside the Powerstation

Spent three minutes pronouncing this wrong, spent 10 minutes cleaning up the cornflakes I spilt when I pronounced it correctly. Bravo

There's a story somewhere (I thought it was on that site, but looking again I can't see it tonight... anyway, maybe it's one of them urban myths) the guys drafted in to clean up after the incident had been offered a choice - do one small task at the chernobyl site (amounting to a few minutes work), or spend 2 years in Afghanistan fighting. What a choice.

I hadn't seen this thread so had a little rethrough and just to derail once more that Chernobyl Heart documentary is heart breaking. We test a group of Belarussian kids' eyes at work everyyear as part of the programme some of them get onto. Terrible event.
