Put more simply:
CRT:
Shine a torch at a wall.
You want to make the wall dark - switch the torch off.
Result: dark wall - energy required goes down (torch is not using power)
LCD
You want to make the wall dark - put your hand in front of the torch.
Result: dark wall - energy required goes up (torch is still on, power needed to block light).
Shit analogy I know, but I expect by now at least 2/3rds of the forum visitors are drunk, so it might be clearer like this.
