Skanky cranky mash up BB fail!

  • i have a problem, BB fail, part of the BB that has cracked, snapped and is stuck inside of the BB shell, any idea of extracting the left-over bit?

  • same thing happened to one of my old road conversions. soak it in GT85 and set it on fire with a blowtorch (this is as far as i know, my mechanic friend did it for me)

as for unscrewing it out i have absolutely no idea what he did. not sure how much help this was!

  • if the bb is aluminium, maybe caustic soda it?

  • thanks for that, but dont think its stuck, just dont know how to grip it to un-screw it.

  • get a large pair of plyers and open them up inside the shell, then maybe unscrew like that? dunno how you would go about getting a good grip but worth a try i guess

  • What you could do is take a sharp flat bladed screw driver and place along the rim of the broken bb shell ( from the inside) . Gently tap it in the same direction you would to unscrew. You need to make sure you do not hit the threads so go along with care and ensure the blade of the screwdriver does not make contact with the threads of the frame but only touches the bb. The aim is to make a slight indent in the rim of the bb which you can then continue to use your screw driver against comfortably to unscrew out.

As long as you do not hit the threads directly you can use a reasonable amount of force to try to get it to begin to swivel once it does it should come out easily unless the thrads are damaged. It will be the same principle as releasing the lock ring without the correct tools and using a hammer and screwdriver.

this technique will work as i've had a similar problem in the past, just go gently at it and be patient.

    good luck

  • EDIT: too slow!

    I've never tried this, but:

Could use a junior hacksaw blade to cut a groove, then tap it round with a flat headed screwdriver + hammer.

Don't count me responsible if you mess up and damage the threads... :-)

  • thanks max. no go. i was thinking of masking off the shell with cardboard and tape, then cutting it with a hacksaw blade, stopping before i get all the way through and using the grove to tap it round.......

  • snap! thanks rich and mullerbugs, given me confidance to give it a go.........

  • sounds like the best option, post the result!

  • if the bb is aluminium, maybe caustic soda it?

    yes.
    probably the safest answer.

  • got the broken BB out of the shell, lots of WD40, found a notch at the edge of the BB, knocked it around with a screwdriver and hammer, it was a slow and quite a frustrating process, but its out. .......thank you for all your help.
