I believe the consensus is that deeper sections will be harder to destroy, but give a slightly harsher ride (and have more rotating weight, which is a Bad Thing). At the speeds most people ride the aerodynamic advantages of a deeper rim are pretty much moot, too. 36 spokes and a really good build are probably the key factors in pothole survival.
