Improved aerodynamics + gives you something to push against. Remember the Italian TTT squad with harnesses to stop them sliding back on the saddle? Back in the day, the fashion was to sit well back, so pedalling reaction force tended to push you back off the saddle, which you had to resist with arm tension. Now everybody sits over the BB like triathletes, it doesn't matter any more.
