• OK a ride to St Margarets looks on the cards (in the pic above it is just around the cliff to the right):
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=51.150817,1.347198&spn=0.075267,0.218353&t=h&z=13

Should be good, check out the cliffs then lunch/dinner at the seaside.
Will check out the route and post up possible date~~ shortly.

24th May - Tarck/Track Day
21st June - Stonehenge/Mathgeek
27th June - Mathgeek
4th July - Dunwich
1st August - EHCP Champs

Which means I select Sunday the 9th of August for this ride, hope you guys can make that date.

Some pictures of the place here: http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Kent/St_Margaret%27s_at_Cliffe/pictures

[s]Any one ever ridden to either of these places?
I have been to Dover before and the view/cliffs are ace.
I have never been to Margate.

I think both rides would work out to about 120KM.
Set off on a weekend morning at the height of summer around 8, arrive around 1.

I would like help finding a quiet route to either of these places.
Anybody interested?~~

• I would, might do it geared, the road bike needs to get some miles on it..

• 8...fuck no

• Margate would be great, KissMeQuickFTW!

i'd be up to help reccies if its a sunday and leisurely

• Oh sounds good if this does not take off I rode to the New Forest a few weeks ago so have done the London to Winchester as a Possible route, about the same distance. I'd be up for leading that with someone.

• you build it and they will come.
i'm always up for longer rides to places i'm yet to visit.

• leave at 8, get there for 1.... thats what we said about the Cambersands ride.
Count me in!

• Dover is a shit hole. I'd suggest aiming for the next village along the coast, called St Margaret in the Cliffe or something, which has great views of the white cliffs and there is a pub right on the beach.

Added: I'd be up for this whichever Kentish seaside resort you aim for.

• I'd be up for it, geared mind...

• Broadstairs is quite fun

• margate is a shite hole
broadstairs is o.k.
if you go to st Margarets
you can probably find a route along the downs between the a20 and a2 there are some nice quiet roads around there

• deal pier...

train back is a fucking night mare.

• Broadstairs would get my vote. I'd also be interested in heading out of town earlier than 8 - how about 4? Light enough most of the way, and it would give us plenty of time to relax in Broadstairs and think about how to get back again.

I've done Dover to central London over the North Downs, which was hard work but beautiful as far as just ouitside Dartford.

I've also done central London to Whitstable at night. On that ride, my main gripes were (a) we had to slog out through Welling and Dartford between 1 and 2 am, not much fun with the locals, and (b) I could have done with more miles beyond Whitstable.

• if you are training back then the closer to ashford you get the easier your return will be.
so dover priory would be your nearest station.
the other alternative would be to go south to hythe /dymchurch and go back from sandling or folkstone. i think this would be an slightly less hill route

If your heading out htat way better to come out of London from Eltham then Sidcup and along the B2173 towards Swanley then just as you come to the traffic ligts on the edge of Sanley take a left and then a right towards Sutton at Home and on towards Longfield, avoid all of Dartford e.t.c

Something like this http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=51.453151,0.037766&daddr=A211%2FMain+Rd+to:B2173%2FMaidstone+Rd+to:Longfield&geocode=%3BFYy1EAMdqHkBAA%3BFWaBEAMddBECAA%3B&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=12&via=1,2&sll=51.436889,0.069695&sspn=0.080257,0.2211&ie=UTF8&ll=51.420192,0.166855&spn=0.080286,0.2211&z=12

anything outside of earls court and walk-about on shepherds bush green then ;)

hythe is nice, but the train is tinnnnnny!

• it's only a few miles ride to the proper BR station i doubt you could fit a bike on RHD Railway

• Would be keen on this.

• i've done the dover run through coastal kent
very nice rides going from dover northwards some posh town great cycle route all the way along the coast
do a loop get a 140 miler in

• Id be keen to tag along on rides and recces subject to dates

• obviously depends on date but i would be up for this.

• yup me too

• After watching that Apprentice show last night on the iplayer have decided I want to steer clear of Margate - failure in publicity letting those idiots run about in your town, not keen on the drag-queens either.

I think andyp's suggestion about going to St Margarets is a good one being as it is near the cliffs and everybody should take the opportunity to check those out if they get the chance.

So now I have to work out a safe traffic free route down there, as always input is welcome on that front.

Will aim to put the date at the center of summer.

• it was andyp's suggestion of st margarets
we all agree margate is a shit hole though.
