2009-05-12 - Rider Down, Camden Road

A big motorbike under a car just outside the petrol station on Camden Road about 10:30 this morning. Looks like the bike was in the bus lane and the car swung across to the left to get into the petrol station. Looked like it had happened fairly recently, but no sign of the rider, hope he's ok.

I live right by this junction and ride past it daily - it's an absolute nightmare with cars turning in and out of there - seen the aftermath of a few smashes: broken lights, pissed off looking fellas carrying a mangled wheel...

Not the safest spot...

Petrol stations always seem to bring out cretinous behaviour in drivers too - the one on Whitechapel road has been a frequent source of irritating/nerve-wracking moments for me as people try to turn right out of it into non-existent gaps.

Got nailed at that same petrol station on Whitechapel road last year cycling along in the bus lane coming from work heading east then a guy coming in the other direction driving his £100 car turns right into the garage didn’t see me, I was a bit battered, bike front end wrecked. I got knocked off in that very spot a little while ago and completely fucked my wrist.
Tis a right nightmare that turning into the petrol station, as there's a bus stop just before it. That's what got me; i pulled round a bus stopped at the stop, and some van that didn't see me and pulled straight across me. Bugger.

I used to go that way every day, joining Camden Road at the crossing by the Tesco/Garage. Reckon I almost saw a near miss every third day. Terrible spot.

That's the one just outside Camden School for Girls. Bit of a dangerous area, vehicles tend to pick up speed on that decline.

I hope the rider is OK.

Ride past it everyday. People seem to love pulling into it from the other side of the road, or impatiently overtaking, only to then cut you up.
