Have you loosened that lockring? if not, do that first and a regular spanner should suffice.

Sorry - I should have explained. The pix is from the other side. My camera crashed and I just wanted to get a photo up asap.
It is the non-drive side which is stuck. There is no lock ring on that side.

Correct me if i'm wrong but in that photo the chain ring is on the far side meaning i'm looking at the non drive side of which you speak and there is quite clearly a lock ring there.

Remember the drive side is LH thread, use a spanner on it or decent sized hammer and chisel.

I bought, a while back, an enourmous adjustable spanner which works OK for this kind of non-standard job, or as locknut duty with a proper spanner underneath for headsets.
Go invest in one. I think the max is about 6 cm, works on my old BB cup that isn't a size that I have proper tool for. I also bought an adjustable pin spanner which has changed my life! Brilliant.

Tommy makes a very good point in that case. If its an english bb you'll need to unscrew it the opposite way. Big hammer and chisel/old screwdriver is also an option. I could never get that bolt and spacers trick to work myself. An adjustable pipe wrench is also handy if a little rough.

Thanks allot guys.
Its a '74 Carlton so BB is English. Just to be clear - to unscrew the opposite way I will be turning clockwise as oposed to the usual anti-clockwise to unscrew something?

I will be turning clockwise
Correct

Just as in aside, pedals are threaded the opposite to BB's so if you remember one you'll remember the other.

There's a special tool for those BBs but I've never been able to find one on sale. As Skully says, a very large adjustable spanner is your friend.

Chain spanners are good news for this type of thing

Hey,
Wondering if anyone can help me.
I have an old bottom bracket. Got one side out but can't get the other one out.
Does anyone have a tool that will fit it that I can borrow/buy next weekend?
I've tried using a spanner but its not deep enough to cover both halves. I've already chipped a bit off so am wary of trying any more. The only other thing I can think is a vice (but i dont have one).
I've spoken to a few bike shops, but I'm really strapped for cash and don't want to have to pay the £15 (possible twice if/when I put it back in).
Any help would be much appreciated.
ps although I'm short on funds I can spare a few beers for anyone with a tool.
