I did the London tri on a 80" gear, singlespeed. I seem to recall it was a 42x14 set-up but when I think about it again, I suspect it must have been 48x16 because of the difficulty of getting a 14T freewheel (only available in BMX thread because of the space needed for pawls and other internal gubbins).
It was great - unlike my previopus attempt, I didn't leave my cycle computer at home and therefore miscount the laps and do an extra 10k, and it was a hoot overtaking the geared riders whenever they changed down, and the 80" gear meant i wasn't spinning too madly. However, it did take me a whisker over an hour to do the 40k. Oh, and it was a few years ago now. I'm younger and fitter now.
