i will be working in east london from early june. i am looking for a MMA club. i googled it and the diesel gym looks promising, any one got any thoughts?
I used to train at a small club in South Wimbledon called Sportcombat. MMA, Muay Thai, top notch BJJ class on a sunday, best bunch of guys ever. I miss them like fucking crazy. Also did muay thai upstairs at the Budokwai over in Chelsea, good instructor and very roomy. BJJ class there was epic, I pretty much spent two hours being raped on a weekly basis.
I've heard good things about the Diesel Gym athough never made it over there, Muay Thai looks like a good bet for there.
You've got the Wimbledon Gracie, and the Hammersmith Gracie too. With Gi, No Gi, Muay Thai, greco, boxing, the works pretty much. Got a couple of buddies training at those camps at the momet and they've come on leaps and bounds.
Shootfighters at Latimer Road, never been but I know a bunch of animals who do go there.. it's intensive to say the least, they don't mess about.
Elite over in Elephant and Castle as well, good club, good level of training, defo worth a look.
And can anyone recommend good shops in London for gloves and various protective gear?
I've used some online shops for the stuff I've gotten so far, but would like to try before I buy, especially for pricey gloves for example.
I pretty much only shop at www.made4fighters.co.uk good range, cheaper than the larger stores like MMA Universe, awesome conditioning section for eveything you need too; Iron Woody bands are your best friend. I don't think anywhere will do try before you buy, best bet is to stick to real leather for your gloves. Good set of bullhide Twins for a budget set of boxing/sparring gloves, Cleto Reyes if you've got the coin and want the best. As for MMA gloves, Rogue, Hayabusa, anything like that will do. Just stick to leather at all times. Muay Thai shins, check ebay, forget oaying anything daft like £50 for them, get onto a thai seller and spend a tenner. Mine are two years old and are still kicking arse.
