• hi - hope this isn't too dumb of a question. i have searched a fair bit and not found anything (which worryingly makes me think it might be REALLY dumb):

i have shimano spd mtb type pedals and i've tightened them several times over the last year or so. last time i did so i seemed to get to some sort of stop where i couldn't turn the allen key anymore (i think i may have rounded off the bolt on at least one anyway).

one pedal in particular is now very annoyingly loose. my cleats don't look to be very worn so i'm wondering it is new pedal time? is there a finite amount you can tighten that spring before it won't go anymore or would new cleats (despite the existing looking pretty good) remedy the situation?

    thanks,

    al.

  • Look through the pedal carefully, you should be able to see the threads on the bolt to tighten them. If your at the end of the threads then no idea what you do, if not your should be able to get there. If its not at the end and you can't tighten it ... i reckon you've done something bad and you will be punished in due course.

  • there is a limit to which you can tighten the pedal, but that probably isnt the peoblem.I would have thought its worth checking how worn your cleats are if they are becoming increasingly loose...spoil yourself to some new single release ones if they are, go on, you know you want to!

    okay!

  • Dump the spuds and get yourself some double-sided Time ATACs. No tensioning screw to do up and the harder you pull up on them, the harder they hang onto your cleats.

    Sorted.

  • Or clips and straps....then you get to wear normal shoes and unless a strap snaps, you don't ever have to worry about accidental unclips :)

  • Sounds like worn cleats to me. Possibly worth a try before spending on a new set of pedals?

Suggestions like this are just pointless.

  • Also cycling in normal shoes knackers my (overly bendy) feet, so I need that extra rigidity.

My pedals unclipped while forcefully slowing down the other day, nearly faceplanted into the back of a van... definatley new cleat time for me.

  • can time atacs be adjusted?

Is there a limit to how far you can tighten clipless pedals?
