Pitlock vs. Small d-lock?

  • Given that this thread is two years old, what's the current wisdom on locking the front wheel with a pitlock vs a small d-lock?

I dont think track hubs are compatible with pitlocks. I might be incorrect. Seems like you can switch out the axle but it may be very difficult to locate a hollow axle of the proper dimensions.

I prefer a high quality d-lock through my front wheel / downtube / secure post + cable running through my rear wheel and saddle rails.

  • Isn't that the name of a vietnamese restaurant on Kingsland Road?

  • Pitlock + Mini Evo + Fahgettaboudit® = Win

  • Someone was saying they used the chain tugs on the rear wheel as a lock of sorts. Would it be possible to get chain tugs with non-standard screws just to make removing the rear wheel that much harder?

  • How about filing off the hex bolt?

  • haha

  • In all seriousness though, what about one with an allen-headed bolt, then put a ball bearing in grease in the hole, and carry a magnet with your repair kit?

  • I got these here and noone's stolen my wheels yet :)

    Costly though.

The question posed was about front wheels so... correct me if i'm wrong, but all front hub axels regardless of bike type (pugsley aside) are the same (100mm isn't it) size, so sourcing a hollow axel shouldnt be too tricky.

  • ...someone who has pitlocks should chime in. I really dont have the answer, but I kinda recall someone here or elsewhere writing about the spacing is off or something...I dont know.

  • I have pitlocks, and they're worth it IMO. beats QR and bolt but obviously not as secure as a d lock around the front wheel. just weigh it up (no pun intended) and see if the extra weight of a 2nd lock is going to be what you need with regards to where you'll be locking up.

Where I live bike theft isnt as rife as london so i'm happy with the pitlocks and a mini evo for the bike.

  • how did you install them? did you switch your axles for hollow ones?

  • I have pitlocks and have had to cut/break them so I can vouch for their durability.

I bought the set which inc. the seatbolt. B/c the seat clamp wasn't flat on both sides and b/c I was retarded, I tightened the bolts too tight, bending the pitlock bolt and then had to saw thru it to remove. It took me ages to cut thru.

On the upside it sold me on the quality.

    (olo: mine replaced QR)

  • I'm a big fan of Pitlocks. I use one for the head tube bolt (ie locking the stem and fork), the front wheel and seat post. Total peace of mind. They can be also be adapted to lock a Brooks saddle to the seat post.
I wouldn't use it on the rear wheel on a fixed bike as you couldn't lock it down tight enough to hold it in place(or risk deforming it permanently). For that you just put a D-lock through the rear triangle and wheel.

  • They make a solid axle version too, see here...

  • I do have a pitlock. But didn't have to switch the axle because I bought a qr type hub. It's also an mtb hub in an mtb fork. And I'm paranoid so I have a lock through the wheel aswell.

But teenslains post makes it all irrelevant anyway.

Like other people have said, you take out the QR skewer and replaced it with the pitlock one.

and yeah theres a solid axle version too.

  • +1 pinhead. they have headset locks, too.

where's this solid axle version? I was thinkin' when I was ready for a new wheelset I'd make sure I got quick release ones but if I can lock 'em up now I'm all for it. I'd rather carry a mini U-lock than a fuhgeddaboutit!

    only compatible with Rohloff hubs.

as far as I can tell, you need a hub that's QR ready.

    amazing.

    bummer

  • this isn't a rohloff hub

it's a mountain bike rear wheel, solid axle.
i wouldn't trust using it on the rear of a fixed gear bike though, as multi says, you would deform it gettting the right torque.

  • hmm I guess I'm wrong.
so, are you confirming they will work?
