Fixed Mountain Bike

Posted on
  • Hey up - I'd like to tgry and convert an old mountain bike/ thicker tyre bike to fixed as a beater and just cause I quite fancy one a knock around bike asx a foil to my other fancier rides-

Does anyone have any suggestions for frmaes with dropouts that'll give me half a chance. I'm 'shit with a spanner' (tm) so any suggestions to make this easier would be welcome. I dont have much lying around so I'll be buiding up parts as I find them.

    Cheers

    Rory

PS- if you've done something similar then any pics would be grand - not SS though, I really want it to be fixed.

  • Just look for a frame with reasonably horizontal dropouts. Both Prav and I use MTB frames for polo bikes.

  • What's the top frame? Would that only work with 700c wheels though?

  • I'm not really sure what frame is, I found it in a rubbish pile and it had no manufacturers marks or stickers. It's meant to be running 26" wheels but I've just put 700s on it. A fair amount of old mtb frames have horizontal dropouts I doubt you will have a problem in finding one in the paper or on ebay.

  • really?! great... I've never been into mtb's and always thought they where mostly vertical or those stubby semi-horizontal drops - I'll start having a nose around then. What sort of spacing are we talking for the hub - or is a job for spacers and suicide hub?

  • on-one have a sale on, new frames for £99 and they are very good

  • I squished my frame a bit to fit my 120mm wheel so have no idea what width hub you'll need.

  • try out genesis io frames or kona unit if you want to spend a bit more try the cotic simple

all the above frames have horozontal dropouts with 135 rear spacing surly do 135 fixed hubs

  • A lot of cheaper mountain bikes will have enough adjustment in the dropout to allow you to tension a chain i reckon you'd be able to pick one up at a dump or find one abandoned just to try it out on. Also I'd go for the Goldtec 135 fixed hub rather than the surly, I'v ehad loads of problems with mine and its difficult to get replacement angular contact bearings cheap.

  • Looking to do similar with my old raleigh mtb. Grilfriend picking her new one up next week and she'll burn me if I don't get on with converting it.

Short-term is going ss, which is fine but don't know what cranks to buy??? Longer term is full-on pimped-up dick-about trail machine so don't want to buy shitty bits now which I'll need to upgrade in a few months time. Also bit stuck between half-link chain and tensioner (vertical drop-outs). Prefer the 'cleaner look' of no tensioner, but many posts on here suggest the 1/2 link won't cut it.

Advice welcome. Might take a few snaps over the weekend and add to the current projects thread...

  • Eno hub would be best but they don't come cheap.

  • yes, I am aware of those little beauties. in the plan for phase 2. know anything about ss cranks for mtbs? my knowlege in this area is limited to triple sets on mountian bikes and singles for the fixed road.

  • be careful of the chainring hitting the chainstays if you go for a 42 mm chainline.

Mine, currently with brakes and ss as I using it off road.

  • nice and thanks both.

that looks a lot like where mine is heading, but watching some sus forks on ebay to beef up the front end. what is that crankset? do want to use it off road til I can afford to fork out for a new, geared mtb.

  • I persoanlly have a fixed one of these

    But I'm a bit strange :-)

    Apparently
I would disagree with the last part of your statement. But then I'd have to as I also have a fixed trailstar.

  • What do you think of this?

    i kind of like it...

  • Pace Frames are fucking awesome. My mate had one, used to ride lovely.

  • nice and thanks both.

Not sure, got it cheap and it works. Hub is a 135 single speed disk hub, single speed on one side, bolt on cog on the disk side for fixed. There are some other threads on bolt on cogs. Not used it fixed off road TBH, I would do on easy bridalways e.t.c but don't fancy trying to keep up with people on gears when I'm fixed.

  • i have heard this a lot, it looks great and my charge was stolen so i have been looking for a replacement ever since. depends on the cost really

  • Pretty sure that is an older pace frame, they don't make them with the rectangular tubes any more which is a shame because it made their brand unique.

  • I fucking love pace stuff. like a bicycle version of delorean. wathcing some rc36's now. used to dream about getting pace forks and think it's about time i treated myself

  • Tried fixed MTB in the woods locally: A very quick way to die.

    ...... ..p

  • did you?

That's exactly the sort of thing I'm wanting to do.
