I think that some of the more extreme things said on this thread about what should be done to this woman can only legitimately be said by vegans
Not at all. Veganism means avoidance of all animal abuse, which certainly includes people. It's always worth pointing out the Vegan Society's motto: 'For people, animals, and the environment'--in that order. The primary objective for us (because we are people) is to ensure a better society for people and animals, although animals are not far off. I would never advocate violence against her. The worst possible punishment for her would be for her to understand her actions.
Those of us who are meat eaters should face the fact that we are sometimes just as cruel, only we do it remotely rather than buying a special bow and arrow.
Cruelty is actually a bit of a red herring, as it opens the doors for the 'humane killing' defence. And it's not cruel to be completely distanced from what happens to the animal. It's precisely that in eating meat so passively you are not being cruel or emotionally upset that causes the problem. An actual experience of cruelty could be a real eye-opener. Still, that in itself isn't enough--I've met so many lapsed vegans or vegetarians who only ever had their emotional reaction to cruelty (e.g., as shown in a TV documentary) to guide their actions, and when that emotion faded, they had nothing else, which is why rational moral reasons are important to bolster up the motivation.
