  • The D40 and D60 are great starter DSLRs. As CrazyJames said, the best thing you can do is spend money on good glass as it will outlive the body.

    I started on a D50 and 18-70mm AFS after shooting on film for a long time (F3 and FM2). I then added a 50mm F/1.4.

    I now have a D700 with various pro lenses and the 50mm is still in use.

    Canon and other offer similar spec camera across the range and it all comes down to personal prefrence. I've shot on Canon and Pentax over the years but prefer Nikon.

    I've been looking at the D60/D80 as a back-up body for my set-up.

    The only people who might want to avoid the D40 or D60 are those that own AF-D lenses as the D40 and D60 won't auto focus or meter with those lenses.
