If the world of youtube is to be believed you can pretty easily twist them apart, and indeed they are an awful inpractical shape.
I go for the small alarmed lock option. One alarmed mini-d around wheel and frame (hopefully clearances would allow this) and just some thin rubbish long cable to wrap the remaining wheel and frame around a tree etc. Keep the bikes close to the tent, and do the toe string thing.
