Or a secret handshake.

Yeah, that way sellers of things could only sell to members. Course, they could always put a phone number in there... but hey we'd police it pretty well ourselves, since selling threads are instantly answered by the likes of Mr Teenslain.
Does that man sleep?

No he haz proplus.
In fact, how about lurkers wouldn't be able to access classifieds at all?
-
• #130
Erm, are you guys serious?
If you are... then it could be done.
And the maths suggest it would work well, but... would it work at all?

Absofuckinlutely.
I was discussing this place with a few people at Fiddy's birthday drinks, just how amazing it is and how much we value it. Value being the operative word.
Its only a thought. I can't pretend to speak for anyone else. I can hardly pretend I'm really conscious of my own mind half the time.

I'd pay a membership fee, happily.
That said I come down on the "let them offer stuff, it's up to us to buy it" side of the fence.
I'd be a member more for the forums long term survival.
You could have a poll?

+1,000,000,000,000,000,000
+1 thats a hood idea, but how are you going to tell who's here for what reason? it sounds as if it would be easily dodgable

£3 per year? Why not? That is essentially the "buy the forum a beer" level. Some people have the get the forum servers well pissed to compensate for the ones that never get a round in (to continue the metaphor).
You could make it mandatory for both PMs and access to classifieds, but it would otherwise be a suggested donation.
The more casual lurkengers won't bother, the regulars would, and those looking for bits would eventually cave when they saw something nice.
Be more clear about the costs of running the site and make it very clear how expensive it is to run.
Micro-payments FTW. Oh and secret handshakes.

I think if the membership gave access to classifieds and maybe pm's it would definitely be a good idea. That way people like Organicorigin would probably still pay the £3 but we could raise plenty for the forum and most likely clear out some of the spammers.

i like CB idea and i don't mind paying a membership either.

Two very good ideas!

i don't mind paying a membership charge.i think it's good idea.maybe more than £3 for people who sell stuff but then who says what goes.
i didn't realise that i was talk of the forum until someone rang me to say i'd popped up on a few threads.
i think that people selling stuff adds vibrancy (probably spelt that wrong but you know what i mean) to any forum not just this one.alot of members only check the classifieds looking for bargins, then get sucked into other parts of it which can only be good.
i know people think that some people, including myself, are running some kind of business on here but how many cheap stems and bars do you need to sell to make it a business.it's all small items that make up beer money or new build parts, you 'd need to be selling 10 frames a week to call it a business and make any real money.i do run my own business (not bikes) so i know what i'm talking about.
most people probably list stuff on here rather than ebay because it's easier and less formal.the buyer and seller can do a deal very quickly and everyone one gets what they.
also i list items cheaper on the forum than there ebay value because it is so quick and easy.
you need to be careful that you don't loose that ease as it will put buyers and sellers off and then i think the forum will lose out.sorry to go on but i've had a few people having a go on my threads

I don't think it's what you're selling or how much you're selling or the price of what you're selling.
Most of the people on the forum who aren't happy with your sales are unhappy because you don't participate in the community. Obviously drinks etc are difficult because you don't live in London but a little more participation might appease the gods.

i hear you but i don't work on a computer so i spend an hour in the evening on the mac, i do add a few bits here and there but time is an issue, been down for a couple of rides and met alot of good people.
i know alot people are on here during the day when there at work as it passes time.the people i've sold things too are very happy and ask for more items, surely thats the most important thing.i'm sure that if items were rubbish everyone would know.
let me know on the members fee etc, i'd be more than happy with that.
also remember that there are 8,500 or so members, most of which are just lurkers, at least selling stuff is adding something in it's own way.like i said earlier it all adds to the good of the forum in my view.
the more stuff going on on here the better for all members.off to watch the match

I've started a poll on the fee thing:
http://www.londonfgss.com/thread21321.htmlWe could consider a second fee level for traders that would only be £10 per year or something nominally higher than a regular donor and would just give them a different status that was more official so that people could see it. This was it would satisfy CB's visibility of traders thing too.

half time
sounds good to me. hopefully the visibility will stop people hi jacking threads or spoiling etc.
thats another story all together.off to vote
