  • I find it easier if there's NO give either way, but I am also aware that it's unhealthy. KTHNXBAI!

  • oh, and I was also wondering if the noise can somehow be interpreted as the chainring / sprocket / chain being 'broken in' and therefore should be endured until it goes away by itself?

    all bits are 1/8" btw.

  • slack chain FTW. i tightened mine up yesterday, not hipster tight but no visible drop on the chain between cog and chainring. noisy as fuck so back to slack for me, track style.

  • when you tighten it and its crunching.. that's too tight.

  • OK, next question: I tightened the chain nice and tight after a pretty pathetic incident where my chain came off. Now it's making a bit of noise sort of, but I guess that's OK?

However, it's seem that when rotate the chain/cog/chainwheel rather slowly I think I can see the chain vibrate a bit.
Is this something normal I've never noticed before or is it the sign of something wrong? I am wondering if it there is an issue with the sprocket. Not sure what that could be though.
Oh, and my chainline is pretty damn straight at the moment, so no issues there I'd imagine.

Chainwheels are not a perfect circle.

  • Helpful and reassuring info! v good. cheers all.

  • helpful info.
fyi my chain was making hell of a racket for the last month, had it tight as fck and was riding up hill and popped a KMC chain... so i reckon- if you can hear it- its too tight. I learnt the hard way... ever had a chain snap on you? not fun.

don't hold onto me, but I think it sound like your chain is a little too tight mate, you should loosen it a little (doesn't feel tight when you flick it) while maintaining a straight line.

  • Hmmmmm just discovered that my chainring is nowhere near circular... both tight and loose chain in one rotation.

My Solution: Ignore it HTFU and ride :D

thats never happened to me and i hope it never does, depending on how steep the hill is that sounds really scary. hope you didnt end up rolling back into the front of the vehicle behind you!

yeah thats how i do it, so its visibly straight but has a little bit of give. feels healthy, especially now since for ages months ago i ran my chain too tight. careless yout'!

  • crikey what if you buy a track crankset - still not round?
