You may not be right about that, plenty of road frames built for deraillieurs of this era didn't have a braze-on hanger, but used a separate hanger that attatched to the axle - I have a Cyclco derailleur from that era with a hanger like this - so the ends may have always been like that. Unless you know one's been taken off, of course.
