  • +1 to ribble I got their bottom end frame with full carbon fork, aksium wheels and xenon 10spd grouppo for £600, it's a great bike for the money.

Been riding it (occasionally) for a year now and covered about 1000 miles, no issues so far.

  • Sorry, no longer helping, I've now gone over to interferring ;)

Used the bike builder on Ribble. Love this function have built many a imaginary bike.

    7005 frame
    Campy veloce gruppo
    Mavic aksium wheels
    Deda finishing kit
    £675

  • Try looking for a slightly second hand Van Nicholas Euros. They sold for about £1000 with 105 and are titanium. I'm guessing they should be in your price range after a year. I thought that was a nice frame when tried

  • I have an allez elite and it is an excellent road bike, however it rides more like a mountain bike than a traditional road bike (which I prefer).

  • just want to add one of the links you posted for a bike was at winstanelys, please do not buy your bike from here (thats if your buying it off the net and from an LBS) there complete bunch of scammers :) good luck with finding a good roady :) im perfectly happy with my 1970s Poyner with campy record/super record with 531 awesomness frame which i picked up for a tidy £380 :) oh yeah i would go check out the treks my friend has one and highly rates it

  • I think the main disadvantage with the stock Allez is the utter-shite Sora chainset. I think it's made of foam. Replaced mine (Allez '08) with a Tiagra chainset. I have now made small upgrades to the whole bike as I think on the whole the frame is very good. I now pretty much sport full 105.

  • i would say hold out until the end of the season if you can....the prices of bikes at the moment is a bit crazy. ex-demo bikes are only going for 15% off when at the end of season you'll get 30-40% off. so, if you can, put your money in a savings account, htfu and ride fixed all summer, then get a much better bike towards christmas and come out firing next year. also you may be able to save more cash and get something better - 660 ain't enough for road bike you need 1200ish.

  • You give me £1000 and you can have my 2008 Trek Madone 5.1 size 56.

Did you buy that Giant, that you posted somewhere else?
If so how do they compare?

  • No. I'm in the final decision phase now, it's between the Giant, Wilier or Look 586.

The Madone is just too small for me so it's uncomfortable to start with.

  • The Orbea san remo is 559, leaving enough spare for a catlike. Nice bikes too.

Tricky, all great bikes. Nice problem to have though.
I recieved a offer from a local internet store. The Cento1 with record/chorus mix and fulcrum R1's reduced from 5k to 3k (believe me, thats cheap where I live). Good job I did'nt have the credit card on me.

  • @Melon,

definately worth searching a bit more, there must be loads of great deals.. I agree with going with a good bike builder like Condor, avoid Cycle Sugery, Evans etc. really not worth it. Looking at offers and reviews in Cycling Weekly (CW) recently.. currently Boardman and Ribble have my vote. But these choices are very personal and it is vital that you should get properly fitted, spend time out of town and road test if you are spending good money, for the best investment.

Remember to get a good bike that fits not a great bike that doesn't, cos you will feel it on a longer ride +60 miles. That's why you are buying gears right?

Last week's CW is a good read, see if you can get a copy.

    peace Al

  • ????

Sorry meant local as in delivery from a warehouse within Norway (where I live, believe me there arent that many), so no added 25% vat and other duty fees.

  • Ah ha! I thought there was something new about the internet that I didn't understand. It's very possible.

  • im having great difficulty finding anything in shops in my size for my budget. trying bikes out is a fairly good indication, but obviously they arnt set up for me so there is room for some error.

there arnt any more allez's in 58/61 in the uk as they are bringing out the 2010 model soon, which seem ridiculous when its only may. there is some on the net however. i do really like the allez, the handling is really sharp, it feels really comfortable, and it always feels like it could go a bit faster.

had a go on a orbea, but didnt like the feel of the ride. it didnt have the same climbing feeling that the allez of defy has.

i can get is the giant defy 2.5. im not too sure if i like the defy very much. it rides nice but nothing about it excites me. its functional but doesnt have that somthing extra.

i tried one of these bianchis today http://www.evanscycles.com/products/bianchi/nirone-7-sora-2009-road-bike-ec016954
it was a complete blast to ride, but it only comes with sora componants for my price range, and i have no idea what the quality of the prowheel compact chainset is. loved the ride of it, best of the bikes ive ridden.

am i getting to hung up over the componants? is sora really bad?

i want to go to a big shop and try a whole bunch of bikes, which shop in london has the biggest selection of brands and bikes?

  • Don't wanna start anything here but just want to say be careful with the Boardmans.

Have you ever wondered how they manage to get such decent components on a frame for the money? The frames are NASTY. I've not ridden any myself, and can't comment on the '09 frmaes, but I know LOTS of people who buy the Boardmans JUST for the groupsets and then transfer parts over to decent frames and make shitty winter trainer/pub/shop bikes out of the frames and bin parts they have.

From what I've been told the weaves they use are 5 years out of date and the ridgidity of the frames have been tripe.Certainly not something you'd want to ride over long distances as they sap energy. I've heard they aren't too great in crashes either

Again, as I said I've never ridden one, this is just what I've picked up chatting to club members both in and around London and down in Dorset.

  • 2nd hand is awkward as im 6'2" and have a 36" leg. almost nothing is in my size. also where do you find these second hand deals? i dont want to buy a bike ive never seen off ebay and pay to get it delievered across country. theres nothing but kids bikes and bmx in the papers, and im not a memeber of a bike club.

If your looking for decent priced and sized bike look on the BCI website.

Plenty of people change their bikes each season, and I can name at least 4 Cat 2 and upwards riders who are your height who do that from London Dynamo alone. I'm not sure if you need memebership to look at the classifieds tho...

  • Cycling weekly classifieds worth a look..

This madone probably worth a phone call
    http://www.magazineclassifieds.co.uk/search/cyclingweekly/details/172765/SPECIALIZED_S-WORKS.php
Over budget but arguably as good a frame as there is...

So much snobbery surrounding Boardman bikes, I presume because of the association with Halfords. The frames are so awful that last years Mens and Womens nationals were won on a Boardman Pro, and the five years out of date carbon one that was ridden to female Olympic and Worlds victories

  • Bianchi do cheap builds of their mid range framesets.

    Yeah! well done me.
    only kidding ;)

The first rule of bicycle purchase is to buy the best (including fit) frame you can get your hands on.
The second is to either buy one with nice wheels or upgrade the wheels.
After this you can upgrade the components bit by bit, preferably as they need replacing.
The only problem here is that starting from a 9 -speed means you may have to change several components at once to convert to higher end 10- speed groupsets (The complete 105 groupset is currently £400, http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=1180)

The Nirone gets some of the best reviews for aluminium framesets, and looks great to boot.
    Gets my vote.

  • I picked up a Bianchi Nirone C2C Campag mirage which had been bought by someone and never ridden, besides upgrading to Conti GP400 tyres @ £70 and a £30 saddle for £450. Granted its not top spec mirage but I am really happy with it.

Was on ebay but the guy was decent and let me check it out before paying etc. I wouldn't want to risk buying something and having it posted.

I then had more than enough to buy a nice pair of Sidis! I intend to upgrade bit by bit...frame is the same on the 1k + models as far as I can see.
