Help me help get kids on bikes

Posted on
  • Hi,
I am starting an after school drop in program for kids in the islington area to learn how to fix and ride bikes.

    I need a few things:

-A place very near highbury & islington where I can store, and have weekly access to, around 20 bikes.
we have been donated the bikes but I have nowhere to keep them.

-kids. If you know kids of any age in the islington area who may want to get involved, they are welcome. The program is every thursday from 6-8pm

-volunteers. Currently I am looking for people who are certified mechanics or those who are certified to teach Bike Ability. The program is every thursday 6-8 in islington. I don't need people who can come every week, but I do need people who can commit to once or twice a month and be dependable.

Please don't "personal message" me. Email me at myfirstname at roxyerickson dot com if you are interested. Please note that I will be out of the country from April 30th- May 4. I will do my best to respond but may need to respond last minute upon my return.

We start May 7th and I need the storage before then.

Thanks ahead of time for any help you can give.

  • I wish I could help. I can't, but I can bump the thread with an adorable picture!
From this set, which is a great project!

  • Thanks Morgan,
    That is a gorgeous photo.

  • Unfortunately I work on Thursday evenings, but wanted to wish you well with the project, particularly being an Islington resident.

Hope you'll keep us posted on how things shape up.

  • Roxy, maybe the Islington Gazette could help with this? (although based on the piece they did about bike polo ... maybe not)

  • I don't want press involved on this one, but by all means keep throwing ideas at me.

  • Hi, not in London so cant help on a regular basis in that way. workmates are generally up for assisting people in any way we can (much more than we can possibly ever do in London) give one a call, likely they will have London contacts too,
we do all the sort of work you mentioned.

    best of luck.

  • is it worth trying to contact road cycling.co.uk, i think they are based in Angel......they might be able to help.
Could be very random, but i am sure the bike mounted police store their bikes around Angel, not sure what the name of the street is, might be worth an ask too?

  • teaching kids how to hit the dirt safely after their first run in with an angry taxi driver

  • Hey All,

I still need help with this. Volunteers, Storage, and Kids.

    help please.

  • If I didn't hate children, I might be up for this. If you ever get stuff together and want to run a mother's bike fixin course, lemme know.

  • Roxy. Brilliant initiative.

Have you tried the Highbury Roundhouse as a possible place to store. Alternatively, the are various churches with halls etc, like Joan of Arc in Highbury or the one at the top of Highbury Fields etc. An idea might be to speak to some of the Estate Agents locally such as Currells. They could well know of places with space and are generally good with helping with local charitable projects.
