Sadly I drove past while a couple of cyclists were giving CPR ...

While I don't ride all that frequently (yet) ... made me think of all you guys.

    Ride safe ...

  • That's seriously bad shit. But, FFS, time trialling on the A1? I wouldn't ride 100m on the A1.

  • There's more about it here - http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=32172

He was a member of that forum ... very sad. Leaves a wife and a couple of young kids.

I've seen them doing the Time Trialling there a few times (A1 between Tempsford - Baldock), mostly early on Sunday mornings. They have bibbed marshalls posted on all of the junctions, but there are no other traffic measures.

Very sad and agreed, the A1 is just madness to ride on. A quick look on google maps shows that both to the north and south of the route is the A1(M) which really says it all. Relative speeds are just too great. It scares the crap out of me when I see people cycling down the A2 locally to me.

  • ^ +1.

    very sad indeed

  • Dreadful news.

    Pinched a link from timetriallingforum.co.uk

As per usual the news story is more focused on the fact of road closures and delays to people, rather than the tragic loss of someone's life.

  • R.i.p.

  • And an 11 year old killed in Bristol when some woman mounted the footpath and ran him down..

    RIP both of you.

  • According to the time triallists' forum, this is the general area where it happened, at the southbound exit slip road from the A1 to the B1048 Cross Hall Road:

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=B1048,+Eaton+Ford,+St+Neots,+Cambridgeshire+PE19,+United+Kingdom&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=10.28957,28.300781&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=Fd7-HAMducn7_w&split=0&ll=52.236789,-0.284271&spn=0.002602,0.006909&z=17

Also from that forum, link to a local news story:

As they say on there, the usual preoccupation with people's convenience and apologies from the police (presumably on behalf of the cyclist) for the road closure. The most disgusting example that I've seen of this sort of focus on traffic was the BBC report around Wan-Chen McGuinness' death in Holborn last September.

The risk on courses like this is not so much caused by vehicles travelling alongside riders but at the inevitable spearpoint junctions formed by such slip roads.

Time triallists will of course continue to ride along fast dual carriageways, and in particular along the A1, much as time trialling has, for obvious reasons, been driven away from these roads.

    A very sad incident.

  • My condolences to his family.
We all need to take care.

you utter cunt. spamming a thread about a dead cyclist is the lowest thing I have ever seen on the internet.

condolences to the family this is very sad.

  • it's a spambot, not human, I think.

Don't quote this, Nick--we have an extremely high Google rating, and any link found on our site goes up a few notches, I would think. Plus, of course we want this off. If people quote spam all over the place, it becomes a lot harder than just deleting the user account in one go.

Spammers are among the lowest lowlife of the Internet, so this is only what one would expect. They wouldn't have read anything, just dumped their stupid link anywhere.

  • it's a spambot, not human, I think.

How would that work, then? To me, this looks like a human--at first he/she couldn't work out how to get rid of the HTML formatting around the link, and then did. That looks like a human effort to me.

That's where I passed them from the opposite carriage way, they were just south of the bridge not quite at the slip, the car was on the hard shoulder and the cyclist being treated by fellow cyclists in the fast lane.

  • My friend Claire was the 2 minute rider behind the chap who was killed and was one of the first on the scene. Keep thinking how I'd cope if I came upon that type of situation. Gives me a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach...

  • I feel for Claire, hope she's OK. I don't think I'd be able to cope at all if I saw the immediate aftermath of a fatal collision. Give her lots of support!
