What's your top speed?

  • I saw some dude on tv last night who spent £500k on 0 gauge model trains..

  • You could've at least posted their top speed to keep on topic =P

  • I once did 52mph down City Road on an 8-speed road bike during a gale.

  • How much do you weigh? Are you slightly built or do you look like the side of a shed?

200W isn't much for me (easy cruising speed, say 25kph on the tops in low wind) and shouldn't be an issue for most people that have done any amount of cycling and aren't at the 50kg end of the chicken leg scale.

5'7" and just over 80Kg. I've got short thick legs that are pretty powerful (rugby forward, albeit a tiny one). So the power itself does'nt sound like it would be an issue from what you say. Just need to train the cadence and stamina. I wont be running the local marathon this year, so that should help my prep (its 2 weeks before the ride). I'm going to really focus on this.

I realise its not exactly the TDF, its just that all the local Norwegians I know, think I'm just a stupid Englishman with a stupid bike (well to fair the bit about me might be true). I'm dying to put in a decent time, no one insults my bike. WA-bunch of-Cs :)

(ED: Smilie added to avoid insulting the entire country I live in. I'll leave that untill pissed after)

I've ridden my unicycle down City Road faster than that.

    HTFU

I was gonna offer you a go on my Powertap (that's not a euphemism) but you're in Norway so that's a Distance Fail.

If you want to do this climb fast then you're going to want to be going at your threshold for the duration. It helps if you've done similar duration efforts in order to be able to judge your pacing. Most people start TTs too fast (I know I do).

  • I just did EC1to windsor. 37miles in an hour and 45mins. Not much of a strain so I'm pretty chuffed with that.

Me on 46:16, mate on his geared bike, 8/10 for the Doner Kebab / Budvar combo on the train home too.

Just get dicki to deliver it. Sorted. :)

    Cheers for the tips.
I was planning on doing some more local mini climbs to prepare. I've got a HRM that I use for running. I'll use that to help me gauge things.

    Back on track.

    on the flat, 74GI, 49Kph
Must be able to do 50Kph, grrrrr

  • My iphone app told me that my top speed on last night's ride was 111kph at 42:16, just shows how pointless and stupid bike computers are, even with GPS

  • Surely this can't be set up correctly?

  • Could be correct - he does ride down Beachy Head don't ya know?

  • If GPS loses the signal it will fill in the gaps.

So, say you catch the Tube and travel 20mi without signal, you might find it's joined the dots and you just travelled at 1200kph.. well my GPS does this some times..

  • I don't have a speedo, but I managed Mornington Crescent-the bottom of Hampstead Heath in five minutes last night. A few pints and a liberal interpretation of traffic lights may have helped ;)

So if I shell out a big wodge of cash for a Garmin Edge or similar might it just make up some of the figures? Seems a lot when you can get a reliable wired computer for £10.

  • The more you pay the less accurate the figures...

    wired
    wireless
    gps

  • Hmm! I don't think I'd like the look of wired though to be fair, especially not with a white frame...

If its only the look you're after and you're not so keen on accuracy just attach the head unit to the bars, ditch all cables/sensors, all that shit and simply write your top speed on the screen with black marker. Here's mine - it looks the nuts on the bike and I dont get any wires or sensors spoiling the looks - how fucking cool is that?

  • I don't know my top speed, but I have broken 30.

However today I proved that I have more horsepower than an old scooter.
repeatedly, and for a long stretch, not just quick bursts.
The scooter driver was pretty surprised.

    He don't look that surprised

This is why I hate scooters.
They dont just choke you and drive off. They overtake (barely) and then hang in front, smelling like a car mechanic unwashed pants.

  • Drafting scooters ftw! They don't get tired like all you lousy cyclecysts.

  • Anti clockwise Richmond park going down the big hill 39mph recorded on a satnav on my fixed wheel Pearson touche. Bloody dangerous as i felt the back wheel skip and a big twitch from the bike, i couldnt pedal any faster and must have slowed the wheel for a split second and was nearly off.

  • OK its a bit windy, but: 49:16, with 23mm Contis, very slightly downhill. Ran out of pedalling ability @ 36mph (just couldn't spin any faster!) got a shove from the wind and hit 39mph.
Dropped back to 35mph on the flat which I maintained till my legs died (about 2 miles).

Got home and couldn't stand up.

    .oo... .i.

Best you give Dave Brailsford a call, as 35mph on the flat for two miles makes you quicker than Brad Wiggins and all on an 82" gear.......
