  • There's no problem queuing for beans.. I was served straight away by a nice lass.. it's all the fuckos queuing for drinks that have the problem.

i picked up some more colombian dark roast this morning, and while being served reaslised i didn't have any cash. so i popped up to the cash machine and back with a minor detour to talk to a friend i bumped into (meaning a total of three trips to the counter in the space of ten minutes).

each time i came back, the queue for drinks was out the door, maybe 10 or 12 people waiting and each time there was only one other person at the counter for beans/ground coffee. all the people who were at the (ahem) bean counter had a bike with them. no-one in the drinks queue did.

    huh? huh?

  • Hippy, how long does the Bezzy take to warm up and be ready to use

I didn't look at the time until a few minutes in and thought "damn I should time this so I know". It must be in the high end of 5-10min to actually be useable but I'd give it longer.

What I'm going to do is buy one of those 24-hour 240V timers (I assume they exist in this country?) and set it up to turn on at 5am every day so it's good to go..

Proof that the most awesome people make their own coffee and cycle.

    I'll agree with that.

  • there wasn't a queue for beans when i awesomely cycled there on Saturday.
they let you order any drinks when buying beans so you get to jump the drinks queue.

I did not know that. I made my girlfriend stand in the drinks queue to get us drinks while I bought some beans (oops). Which actually turned out to be quite an involved process as they got me tasting stuff as well, which was nice.

Incidentally, I was amazed at how much difference the monmouth beans made. both in terms of taste, and getting better crema (thicker, darker and flecked). I'm in a pretty good place coffee-wise right now.

  • This is Monmouth organic Guatemalan.. it gives good head..

  • i just unpacked 10lbs of coffee from my suitcase

  • I just had two cups of fresh coffee. Mmmmmm. <--- coffee appreciation

  • I had two this morning, too. Mmmmmm. <--- coffee appreciation

  • I always start the day with a tea, though. Mmmmmm. <--- not coffee appreciation

  • cannapuccino was nice

  • If I drink enough Belgian brews now.. will it counteract the coffee experimentation later?

  • Nah, uppers and downers FTW.

  • So I need to dip into the Special Stash(tm). Okay.. it IS a Tuesday after all.. biggest night of the week.

  • Had an excellent coffee at Leila's Cafe.
Keira Knightley was there getting her morning Cappucino too. We have so much in common.

  • Finally unpacked my Gaggia Cubika (in the loft for 12 months+ - Am I Evil), and bought some beans:
Artisan roasted cofffee - El Salvador Santa Barbara and old brown Java. (J. Atkinson & C0.)
    Very little choice here.

Both very nice. Need to get this grinding thing sorted.

I thank you all for the tips.

  • I get on well with my Cubika - if you look after it you'll find it does the job fine. That said, I haven't used any other domestic machines so that doesn't say much for my opinion!

That said, and I know this'll irk someone, I don't see the benefit of spending more on a machine. The Cubika is around £150 while the next model up is about £75 more. A Rancilio Silvia... well... I need someone to make me an espresso that tastes £200 better.

  • My mother bought a Nespresso machine. I have always disliked coffee and seen it only as a means to getting over a hangover.

BUGGER ME. I have tried 2 so far and they are beautiful to taste.

I can safely say I've appreciated my first cup of coffee. (Now the hatred comes)

  • you know that George Clooney pees in each of those little pods, right?

  • I heard that it wasn't his pee in those pods..

  • Clooney pee or not, they are surprisingly good.

  • I think I can use pods in my Gaggia? They just sit in the portafilter where the freshly ground would normally go. I'd be interested to see how they went. I'm guess they would be better than OTP pre-ground since that stuff seems to be ground to suit caffetieres and moka pots, ie. not fine enough.

  • Hippy can I have a coffee please? All this talk and photos is making me want a caffeine hit.
