  • I missed the Dunwich last year! now i can see so many people do or have done it fixed i will definitely do the ride fixed this year... really wanna do a century ride on fixed at least once if it kills me this time.

  • I am running an 80inch gear which i use everyday to commute am i going to have to put a lower gear on for the ride? are there big hills?

  • The Dun run is almost completely pan flat. There's one kicker which you can walk up, but that's about it. I ran 74" the last time I did it on fixed and it was absolutely fine.

  • Please tell me you're doing it on the penny farthing this year. That really would be awesome.

  • i cycled to a stag do in darsham at the weekend - five miles from dunwich.

used my old dynamo route sheet... it is even flatter in the daytime than at night!

    86gi ftw.

  • Pft! 53x11 FTW. Weakling.

  • Sunday morning = returning from Dunwich, in tatters

Sunday evening = fly to Spain for 10 days.

    I can't decide if this is :( or :D

  • i am out, got something better to do.

  • The Ship is a great pub

But you need to wait will 12 for it to open

If they won't open up early, maybe somebody (not necessarily you, somebody) should ask another local boozer to open up, special loike?

  • I'd go for a lower ratio, just on the grounds that your metabolism pretty much stops in the wee small hours and everything suddenly becomes a lot more like hard work. OTOH, I'm a wuss who's only ever done it one geared bikes, albeit the first time was on one of these (not recommended):

    Two points,

    1. next nearest pub is not very near.

    2. The cafe cells cans. Expensive cans, but they are convenient. Also bring a hip flask.

  • Also bring a hip flask.

I'm bringing one, probably with some malt in it. Bring a craik if you fancy a crack of dawn snort.

  • Probably going to do it on 48x19. Spinny, but as mentioned, a godsend when you hit the wall 80 miles in (well, I do).

  • yeah i will prob stick to the same gear i use all the time, have only done around 70miles so hopefully the hills will be early...

  • No they are late but not that bad.

  • Yeah, they're only a few hundred yards long at most.

The longest is fairly early in the ride. Well, about 25 miles in IIRC.

  • I'm really up for this, but not done any massive long rides for a while. Don't think I'd do it fixed, but would anyone be up for some longish rides on a sunday sometime? I'll try to get the geared bike up.

  • Please tell me you're doing it on the penny farthing this year. That really would be awesome.

    Quite possibly.

  • Please tell me you're doing it on the penny farthing this year. That really would be awesome.

    Quite possibly.

    and quite possibly me too.....

  • this will be a good ride... Would be good to do it with others fixed so you can share the suffering! Does anti e k ow if the ride a still you g to start at 8pm as usual?

  • dunno what my phone was typing there, meant to say does anyone know if ride starts at 8?

  • Yep 8 ish but turn up earlier for a quick beer / pee route sheet.

  • No they are late but not that bad.

How bad is not that bad? In comparison to lets say shooters hill or any hill in london?

I am excited but also terrified that I'll have a go at this. I do have a 10m commute each way regularly on an easy gear fixed, max i've done in a day is around 30 - 35 or so. Will do some prep rides this and next month, but yeah, still scared in a way.

Guess i'll buy some assos cream and bib shorts with extra padding :/

  • pascalo, the distance is seriously the least of your worries. You'll easily be fit enough--it's not a race. Make sure that you get the rest of the logistics right. From memory, there are some posts upthread that explain what you need to do, and do refer to the Southwark Cyclists FAQ:

    http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/social/dunwichfaqs09.shtml

Just make sure you enjoy yourself!

  • I'd defo go with the shorts if you never done longer than 35miles, but as it says above it not the quickest ride in the world so as long as you gotta a comfy saddle you should be alright. i would recommend that you do some long rides in the couple of months till the ride. you dont want your legs dying when nowhere is open... oh yeah and its pitch black!
