Balls to Bearings!

  • The bearings on one side of my rear Surly hub were shot. I went to fit a new cartridge and went for the technique of screwdriver in the other end to pop the busted cartridge out. The thing popped out, but the outer ring was stuck in the hub. Tried to get it out with the screwdriver but no joy. Taken it to Condor this morning. It won't be till tomorrow when they get to it. If they can use their cartridge tool to get it out it will cost £5. That sounds like it may be tricky though. If they can't, they will need to use a dremel to grind through the ring and break it out. That would cost nearer £50! I've asked them to call me before doing any dremeling though. I have everything crossed the tool works.

Think the lesson is to either get the right tools or take it to your LBS and pay a fraction of the cost it would cost to fix your mistake.

  • I had this problem with the cartridge bearing in my fixxer, took me ages to get the outer cage out, but i did in the end (thanks dad!) using a variety of tools and brute force. new bearing slipped in well easy too!

  • Fuck!

How the f did the cartridge just disintegrate like that?

  • That's what happens quite often happens to cartridge bearing when they are worn.

Threaded bar + a selection of washers and piping can make good tools for this type of job.

  • buy yourself the dremel for £50 then whore yourself as a cheap bearing remover for £40 quid a pop!

  • Yeah £50 is a joke. Go and see Tommy the brick and ask him to work some magic.

  • Yeah. I figure I'll let thm have a shot with the tool thing, and if that doesn't work I'll be looking for some forum help in return for beer. It's a delicate job if a dremel is involved though. Too much and the hub will be fucked.
