I've never had any problems using tape (rather than glue). And I've never pre-stretched a tyre either. I'd agree the whole thing is actually easier than fitting many rigid clinchers.
Although Vittoria Rally's are ok the main downside I've found while running tubs is tyres with decent puncture proofing cost £30+
