Integrated Handlebar & Basket

  • Hopefully not a re-post. I think this is a spiffing idea. Not sure about the load limits when its all the stem/steerer? But intelligent design non the less.

  • was just checking that out on Gizmodo yesterday.

    i had these thoughts:

    very cool idea, but it *should be integrated into the stem as well. any loading problems would be prevented if the stem was designed for it. I can't see the steerer caring much unless it's carbon... and in that case you likely wouldn't be putting a basket on the bike

    and then i started to think that a sleek seat post with an integrated basket would be a cool idea also.

    *i don't think the stem would ever break, but i'd be concerned about it's rigidity. wouldn't want the thing catapulting your 40oz into the stratosphere when you hit a few well timed bumps.

  • That's a fantastic idea!! It would be nicer with an integrated stem so you could use it on a threaded fork... Might have a go of making one of these for my good lady, she says she wants a basket but until I saw this I couldn't come up with a suitably schnazzy one!

  • The stress factor worry me also, especially when the basket is only held on by a single clamp, probably fine for those small books and such but doubt it would able to sustain a larger load, also I bet it would bounce a lots.

    honestly, those WALD basket (abet American but still) are cheap as chip and fit on any bike pretty well, how much would you think that those handlebar/stem combo would cost? I'd definitely says it's over £40.

    also the bike in question;

  • Keirin bike with a basket attached to the handlebars?

    Fills me with envy & hate.

    People should realise there are appropriate bikes for certain things. Same people would refuse to ride a bike with eyelets, bosses or even brakes as they would ruin the 'clean' look, such conradictions. The sharp steering loaded with a basket would also feel terrible.

  • I agree, i don't like it at all!

  • I like it as an idea, but am not keen on that^^ example at all.

  • It's a waste of a track frame! It would far better suit it to used an old road frame with more relaxed geo + horizontal dropouts. And it's brakeless .. meaning it's gonna be harder to stop with more weight in a basket up front! Just incredibly stupid, and only aesthetically appealing.

  • It has uses, and is not 'incredibly stupid'. It's a neat idea, with some issues that need ironing out. I'd use one on my singlespeed MTB when it is in it's 'fuck off to the shops' mode.
    It's really easy to slate a brave attempt at something new. Don't be so negative.
