Paul Comp: Cranks, Brake & Hubs

Posted on
  • After purchasing a Paul Comp E-Lever from BLB, I've been thinking about getting the Racer Brake and Crank. The Racer Brake is available from Freshtripe for £75 and the Crank will be at BLB in a month or so at around £160.

Has anyone already bought and fitted these items and has some thoughts on them. It's quite a bit of cash and I don't really need them. Although my crank is a basic RPM which I'd like to replace at some point. I'm pretty happy with my Shimano 105, but would be nice to match the brake lever I've already purchased. If I get some overtime at work, I might be tempted to spend a little on my fixed.

In the future I also fancy upgrading my hubs and Paul Comp also do these, but have heard the Goldtec one's are pretty good and they're cheaper.

Justing looking for some input before I spend any more cash on my bike.

  • Raplce the cranks. Do the racer brakes fit?

  • They're centre pull. I don't really get how that works but I think it involves putting something in the stem/headset area. Welcome back Wapping.

  • don't believe the paul comp cranks. they are out of stock in most places till end of the year, when they start making more. been this way for 3-4mths. very nice piece of kit. hubs are nice as wheel, same level as goldtec.

  • most importantly, are you coming on monopoly ride tomorrow night!?

  • this has some pics on it

pauls are cheap if you get them from the US, and donlt have to pay any charges

  • So the brake won't fit?

I'd not really looked into it that much. It looks almost the same as mine fitting wise.

  • The fitting is the same but it's a centre pull brake and not a caliper brake. That means that the cable splits and joins at the left and right of the Paul logo. It then goes to a metal thing and then goes to a ring that's mounted as part of the headset/stem (unsure). The centre mount option is new and they were intended to be mounted to braze-ons on the fork. For your bike they're not really the right kind of brakes.

  • they also have a ridiculously long reach

  • I wouldn't get the cranks due to the propietary chainring, although they are nice.

  • Momentum I wouldn't get the cranks due to the propietary chainring, although they are nice.
they are bolt on the inside to the crank arm, like the vintage TA ones ;) . pretty strong!!

  • um, also the same as my angle-ground stronglight ones, and it was those bolts coming loose constantly that prompted me to want to take the cranks off.

(but then again the bolts were all worn and I couldn't get an allen key into any of them properly)

  • Whats wrong with 104mm / 110mm / 130mm / 135mm / 144mm / 151mm BCDs? we need another standard?
I DO think the splined white Industries cranks look great - but I wouldn't buy them at the moment..
    ^ similarly Middleburn singlespeed cranks.

  • I see what you mean about the brake now.

Someone explain "propietary chainring" in layman's terms please ;-)

  • weird size

  • Sorry to jump in, was gonna post a new thread, but this is pretty close..
I'm looking at getting the Paul's E-lever (RH) - I guess I can just attach this to a standard cantilever brake?

  • I've fitted mine straight to a shimano 105.

  • huh????

  • spamtastic

  • Got a black e lever for sale here if anyones interested.

  • for use on rh side? - old or new model ? what is your priceidea?
