The worst of the "oh shit" moments that afternoon was when a woman pulled alongside me whilst I was in the right hand lane waiting to pull onto a roundabout, to turn right (naturally). I pull away, as does the car to my left, as does the car that has shoved its bonnet against my elbow, fast. The gap between the cars closed to a gap significantly smaller than me. Fortunately I saw it coming and backed off so I was behind both cars by this point, otherwise could have been hairy!
Nice anticipation. You might have sat further out in your lane, stopping the second car from overtaking you (riding in primary position - cyclecraft), but there seem to be some drivers it's just better to get out of the way of.

Tried that, obviously not far out enough!
Earlier in the same ride I had two people overtaking me on the approach to roundabouts, left hand lane this time, but I was sat right in the middle of the lane, they just stamp on the accelerator and swing out into the right hand lane and shove the bonnet in front when they swing back in (and stop). Like you said, sometimes its just easier to back off.
I need to find a nicer way to get out into the New Forest from Bournemouth!

Oh shit! I misspelt Piccadilly.

Would have to be my dodgy 'special Olympics' comment about my lack of bowling skills when chatting with Jay Leno. The Mrs nearly gave me a slap for that one.

@mr president - you didn't have an 'oh shit' moment when Air Force One was causing mass panic in New York then?

I've moved from SS to FG for just over a week. No brakes so been riding nice and easy and been really enjoying it.
THEN this morning this FCUKING mupet in a silver 5 series silver BMW decides to do a U-turn on Birdcage Walk (near Horse Guards Parade) while I'm rolling down the outside. I see him pulling out so I try to shout "WOAH, HEY, STOP" as I can't skid as yet and too close to manuver around his tank of a car. The front wheel hit the offside passenger door and my face planted it's self on the window. I screamed "WHAT A CNUT, WHY DIDN'T YOU FCUKING CHECK YOUR MIRRORS CNUT?" I wanted to rip his fucking head off, but there was two hi-vis bobbies on the scene. So I told the man to pull over and I got the police to come and take my statement.
The bike is fine and i've got a brused cheek bone. The PC said the road traffic lot will be in touch. Is it worth going through the effort of getting something from this CNUTS insurance?

If you're riding without brakes (or at least 1 as you're fixed) then you should take it on the chin...

Glad to hear you're ok. But let me get this straight, you've got no experience of riding brakeless, you've been riding fixed for a week, and can't control the bike well enough to skid/stop/skip stop etc in an emergency.....and yet you are riding around brakeless in traffic?

I just wanted to clarify the above before I make any further comments....

Yes. I've been OK with slwoing down when coming up to lights or seeing traffic ahead of me and prepairing for it.

I suppose I've got to get a front clamp on for such occations. I know that cars and peds can suprise you, I've just been more alert and cautious since riding Fixed, but I suppose that will only get you so far.

Why?
Because it's an additional risk that you're aware of and prepared to take when riding your bike simply by riding 'no-brakes'. This means you're also aware that you won't be able to stop as quickly as riding with a front brake. This means that by riding in this way you also pose an additional hazard to other road users. Simple really.

Mate....you need to learn how to stop the bike quickly/efficiently before riding brakeless, its as simple as that, if you can't skid (or equivalent method of stopping quickly) then put a brake on....or two, otherwise incidents like this will end up occuring frequently, and one day it will be more than a bruise.

Although watching all these fashion over function muppets crashing all the time lately is kind of amusing....
At the moment though you "Out of control brakeless riders" are running a close second to the single-speed front brake only rider, so on second thoughts..... carry on as you were. -

Indeed I am at greater risk, but I don't think I should just accept that this retard didn't signal or look in his mirrors and isn't aware of surroundings, so there is nothing I can do!

Advice heeded, I'll get a front brake and and get to skidding today.

Even if he or she was driving like a complete twat if you'd have been able to brake more effectively you 'might' have been able to avoid the incident, or any like it. Just saying, and this is not a criticism of your riding skills, just physics innit.

I think thats relating to his ability/skill to brake with the bike, if i'm not mistaken...

I almost ran into Vanessa Feltz on Oxford St yesterday. She did say Sorry but i was scared she was going to eat me. More comfortable than hitting a bus though.

when i ride brakeless i try to ensure there's a fat person in front of me at ALL times to act as a cushion.

I just prefer to aim for the nearest available fatty when I need to stop, i'm too big to slow down if I hit skinny people, its like trying to skid on ice....I just keep on going.
