lacquer or clearcoat over an unpainted frame was a popular fad for racing cyclists back in the earkly 50's........also it showed how well built the frame was, looks good!

Don't leave it bare or it'll rust you big ole lanky big spazzer. You wanna lacquer it, innit?

I know of so few frames that have succumbed to rust to the extent that it has been an issue.

I've just picked up a Dawes frame for a project after my old one got nicked. It's a bit rustier than I expected it to be. Can a frame be too rusty so it's no use? How would I be able to tell?
Here are a couple of pics if it helps.
Thanks

if you get it bead blasted you will soon see if there are any structural issues. it might have to have been sitting in salty water for a hundred years for it to be un-useable though i would imagine, which this frame i presume hasn't, right?

Thanks Coppi. Salt water? I doubt it, lol.
I'm planning to get it powder coated by Armourtex. Do you think they will be able to tell me if it's structurally unsound before completing the process. I understand they're not bike specialists?

Christ I dont want it t go that rusty! A quick dismantle and some b&q metal laquer it is then!

Its very rare for a frame to have structural issues - generally its fillet brazed or tig welded frames that suffer the most where the water cannot get out. That Dawes will be fine though pitting on the surface may show through the powder coating...
Bare metal frames can be clearcoated though eventually water moisture will get under the clearcoat... -

Hey up all
I've got a stripped frame... all chrome and brazing - i wanted it to be a bit shinier silver - do I need it refinishing?
