Incorrect inner tube size

Posted on
  • So its a nice sunny day and I fit some 23's to my bike, changing from the 32 cyclocross tyres.

Only I've just realised I've pumped them up with 28-32 inner tubes in it.

Can I get away with this? if so, for how long? Is it recommended I go into a shop ASAP and get the right size? To be honest, I'm suprised its staying on the rim, i've no idea how much pressure ive put in them yet but they're fucking hard.

Will I die if I try and ride it?

  • ive got them in my 23's....no problems yet!

  • not sure about this one...ask edscoble he knows about things like this

  • You'll be fine.

If you're really unlucky you might get a pinch flat.

    Nothing's gonna go bang.

Use a pump with a pressure guage. If you don't have one any bike shop will let you use one.

  • I had problems doing this with some new wheels laced to Velocitys. 28 tube, 23 tyre. The tube was inflating into the spoke holes of the rim at 100psi. Never had the problem with same tyres on the old rims. Added 2 bits of electrical tape under my plastic rim tape and changed to 25 tyres. No subsequent problems apart from a large number of patched innertubes littering my room.

  • Your bottom bracket will certainly fail. Get a larger tube in their, stat!

  • Its better squeezing in thicker fat tubes than using tubes which are too small which then stretch painfully thin... But you can get away with all sorts of different sizes in an emergency.

  • Yep, you'll be fine. If you were using 23c tubes in 32c tyres then you'd be likely to have problems because the tube would be stretched too thin. Using oversized tubes sometimes makes getting the tyre to seat properly a more difficult job, but that's about it (as long as you're using decent rim tape).

  • i've used a normal 18-25 on 700x38, no problems

  • You bike is now broken a a public health risk. I will dispose of it for five pounds.

  • nearly got me!

  • they will be slower on corners but should do..

  • Might be a rookie question but I'm running a 700x28c front tyre and hadn't popped an inner tube until today. Popped in BLB as its close to work and the guy sold me a Bontrager 700x18c-23c inner tube saying it'll fit upto a 28c tyre.

Is this right? Would the packet not say 700x28c?

  • it should be saying 700x28 on the box but this one will be fine, it'll stretch, no need to worry

  • It'll probably be fine, and just end up stretched a little thinner. That'd result in slightly less defence against future punctures. I'd probably not worry about it though. I always carry a spare. I think CRC are selling spare Michelins for £2 at the moment.

  • Be fine, no need to worry with it, I've seen a 26" inner tube used on a 24" wheel, stayed like it for 4 months haha.

If you blow an inner tube up out of a tyre you'll see how much then expand, I'd recommend getting one the right size next time ones needed though :)

  • As above, should be OK, though maybe slightly less puncture resistant.
Slightly smaller tube in a larger tyre is OK, the other way round, doesn't fit!
Maybe excersize a bit of caution when inflating, if normal pressure is 100psi, then just go to 80psi and ride that for a bit, then go for the extra 20
