    I'm not sure it does, you know. I spend a while getting my other half's old MTB shifting smoothly only to realise that she pretty much never, ever, changes gear. I think this goes for a vast number of slowish, shortish-distance commuters. Certainly it's absolutely the standard practice in Cambridge where I grew up - every bugger rides, but a spot-check of bikes would reveal a lot of unused shift levers. SS is just a nice, efficient way of getting that simplicity without lugging a bunch of delicate shifting equipment about to no purpose.
