Measure the width of the BB shell.
68mm = British standard, 70mm = ItalianThe rest is decided by your choice of crankset.
(ED: How old is the bike. If its very old there are other options)

search "BB" "bottom bracket" and see what happens :)

thanks for the explaination.
i was going to use a Sugino Messenger crankset should i just go with a Sugino BB as well?
i dont think the frame is that old i'd guess early 80's there were no markings of any brand on it just a very pretty pink and white colour scheme.thanks.

ok as soon as i get the frame back i'll take some and post them up. just had the BB shell measured apparently its 68mm so the sugino should be a good fit. but i'll post some pictures when it come back from its paint job.

check the transmission database thread for combos for your Messenger crankset.
was wondering if anyone could help me work out which BB would be compatible with my bike frame?
is there any way of telling by measuring on the frame or anything else? i dont know anything about my frame other than that is made from Reynolds 653....
