I'm inclined to agree. I went through this when I was at BLB. They seemed adamant that a 56 was right despite being 6'2. I bowed down to their knowledge as this is my first road bike since about 1985 (and I've grown a bit since then). I immediately shifted the seatpost to its max height and so far haven't noticed problems. However, seatpins tend not to be as long as MTB's and as posts above suggest, I should be looking for a longer/stronger seatpin.
I can't afford to replace the frame at the moment, so will have to live with looking like a circus freak.
I always size my frames by top tube length - in spite of being 6'1", both my short reach and preference for a more relaxed riding position have me riding a 55cm road bike and a 56cm fixed.
As long as it's comfortable, I don't feel it really matters too much.
