Was running 49X13 (99.4)...then I realised how ridiculous that was :)
49X19 FTW, a nice spinny 68gi ;)

Wow, that's a fair jump, must have been some transition. Notice that you do the trixiedix, you use that for commuting too?
-
• #4
Nah I don't commute, might give it a shot the odd nice day during the summer but I live on Pearse Street and work in Co.Kildare so it's a long as hell commute! ;)
The transition was ok really, just meant my acceleration was waaaaaay faster when I changed down... made braking easier too... 99gi brakeless is... interesting ;)

Yeh think I'd prefer the bit more acceleration from starting, I'm too much of a pussy to absolutely bombing along on the flat too. And speaking of too much of a pussy, went out for spin on sunday morning and stopped off at the park to try skidding....just can't seem to get it at all, that's prob a bit easier on the lower gear too? I can't see how you run without a brake at all, on any gear let alone 99gi?
-
• #6
Ah you get used to it, I only started riding brakeless because my brake cable frayed so badly it was useless and I didn't get around to changing it...
-
• #7
started on 42x16, then went for 42x15 which is what i'm on now. when i have more money i'll probably get a bigger chainring and cog so i can get more skid patches. i only have 5 now.

I'm now using 42:16 which is a great gear for round town. Previously had 48;16

if skidding is your bag baby i recommend either a 18 or 19 rear sprocket. i started on a 52/18 with flat pedals... thank god for brakes. i now run 44/18 with no brakes and toeclips and have manage to skid my way out of some dodgy situations. skidding isn't about brut force, its about throwing your body weight to allow the rear wheel lift alittle.

I had... then I drank too much and got lazy, lol, at one stage last summer when the missus was gone home to Hong Kong for a month I was cycling everyday and I put on a stone in 3 weeks riding 99gi!! I'm just fat now though :( Soon to be fixed however ;)

My conversion has 52-18, not too fond of the gearing any more.
My Fuji is 48-18, ME LIKEY its about 72.2GI
Both with a brake, especially after today and my brothers...Mishap... -

I found out I don't like steep hills :/
But yeah, at the moment I am running 47 16, which gives me 78.6 gear inches.
I'm not running any breaks for my commute, but I have to put one on for races and the like, they just look soo ugly

69" for me.

49 16 is what I've got on the Mercian, does me grand for the Dublin streets!
-
• #16
49:18 36 skid patches and i think its about 72.5 gi or something.
Right heres a question, if you take off ur rear wheel and rotate it out of the chain ie so the same part of the chain is resting on different teeth of the sprocket, would this mean that ur skid patches would be in different spots? I can thnk why it wouldnt but just thought id ask.

• #17
Aside from Howth, Killiney, and the Dublin Mountain's I can't think of any hills in Dublin. I'd say London and Ireland are equally hilly, at least, I never noticed a difference.
I ride 49 - 15 with 172.5 cranks, so 85.8 inches. I don't do any skids or even slow down with my legs unless its for 'fun'.

Yeah that would work but you'd have to work out the ratio between your sprocket size and wheel size and then divide that by number of skid patches...
2100mm = 700c w/23c tyre
2100/36 = 58.3mm so that's the distance between your skid patches
2100/49 = 42.85mm which is the distance one tooth change would make on the tyre surface
Technically by moving one tooth it would land your new skid patch to be just in front of where your old one was...
I may be wrong but this makes sense to me ( I was shite at maths though...)
Anyone care to check?

Anyone care to check?
No, not untill you come to polo/an alleycat.
-
• #20
I know :(
My fork arrived though so I can actually cycle again now :) I'll try and get up to polo this Sunday, don't think I'll be racing yet though, need to actually get somewhat fit again and I have a few more things I want to get finished on the bike before I get back into it properly ( Double straps, seatpost, headset)

• #21
cheers for that
-
• #22
I have 46x17 (I think) which gives me 71.4 gear inches which seems just about perfect for me.
-
• #23
im rockin 43 x 15 brakeless.... niggaz know!
wat sorta ratio is that... could someone tell me if that shits damaging my back??
all i know is its a rocket and i havent crashed once yet.holla!
-
• #25
wat does that mean?
Seeing as though we're probably a bit hillier than London, what sort of ratios are you guys running?
I started with what was on the bike 48X16 and dropped it to 48X18 (71"). Work is a bit outside my range for commuting but moving closer soon and thinking of dropping ratios again to make for a more leisurely cycle, still find it tough on the hills.
