trail bike tend to have fixed hub (but freewheel crankset), not sure how it work, althought I don't know why the backpedal.

they do have fixed hubs, has been for years.

regarding the hubs, the ratchet mechanism of some hubs, dis-engages when going backwards.
it's called a freecoaster hub.
SOme trials bikes have what is known as a front freewheel, and run a rear fixed wheel.
