Just in case someone is interested in a bit of 531 awesomeness:

A lovely road frame made of Reynolds 531 tubing in excellent condition for its age.

Ideal for a restoration project with a full Campagnolo groupset

    Seat tube C-t-C: 52 cm
    Top tube C-t-C: 53 cm

    Frame weight: aprox. 1850 gr.
    Forks weight: 715 gr.

    BB Shell: 68 mm
    Rear Spacing: 130 mm
Fork and BB shell: English thread
    Front and Rear dropouts: Gippieme

Estimated year of production: early 1990s

A bit of background: One of the top Spanish frame builders during the 1980s and early 1990s. His workshop, located in Madrid, provided frames for several professional Spanish teams, including the national road squad. He mainly concentrated on top-end road bikes which used to be fully equipped with Campagnolo. These were the bikes of choice for any dedicated road rider in Spain at that time. Despite his relative success and reputation in the domestic market, he continued to operate a low-scale production of high-quality frames and never sought to export frames abroad. This is why it is a relatively little known outside Spain although the quality of his frames is on a par with other better known European manufacturers like, say, Gazelle, Olmo, F. Moser, etc...

This frame has been well looked after by previous owner and it is in an excellent condition. Classic road racing geometry. Down tube shifters and seat tube front derailleur braze ons. Hidden brake cable route on top tube. Cut outs on lugs and BB shell. I believe it's fully build with Reynolds 531 as it has a pretty respectable weight for a fully lugged steel frame, although this is difficult to say with certainty.

Without doubt the most impressive thing about this frame is the paint work:

Fully chromed fork and rear triangle in perfect condition with no signs of age and not a single rust spot. Chromed head tube lugs (The chrome of the upper lug has a crack and it has peeled off a bit). The chrome of the front and rear drop outs is in excellent condition with hardly any noticeable signs of usage.

The paint of the main triangle is also in excellent condition. The only minor blemishes are a tiny chip on the lower part of down tube close to the BB shell and a minor white mark on the top tube, a superficial scratch probably from resting the bike on a railing or sign post. No dents or dings whatsoever. The decals show signs of age and some of them are cracking. Reynolds badge is in perfect condition. Campagnolo world logo sticker between shifters braze ons.

The colour of this frame is amazing and difficult to define as it is a sort of metallic, dark bronze colour which changes shades depending on light conditions. My crappy camera can hardly do justice to it. In some of the pictures you can catch some light reflections but these are from the paint finish as I haven't used flash when I took the pics.

The price for the frame is 180 pounds including postage (I live at Madrid and the cheapest quote I could get to have this frame delivered to the UK is 50 euros). I am perfectly aware that postage cost put this frame a bit on the "expensive league" but I certainly cannot lower the price for this beauty and prefer to keep it rather than sell it for peanuts

If anyone is interested in the frame, I can add a 27.2mm Campagnolo aero seat post (with some marks as it was inserted relatively low) and a 111mm Campagnolo BB with English threaded cups. Both parts originally fitted to frame. Price for the aero seat post and BB is 50 pounds. (They are sold with the frame not separately)

If you want more and higher resolution pictures sent me a PM with your email address.

    Cheers

  • In the 90's I personally met Macario, the old man himself. I know his sons, daughter and son-in-law (the Rumanian bastard ;-) )
    Nice folks, nice bikes.

There's a Macario 58cm track frame for sale in Madrid, but the seller/blogger doens't reply, otherwise I might but it.

  • hmmm, all i can say is if you're out there i'm still interested

  • @ Palsten:

Unfortunately the bike is no longer for sale.

I have got some spare bits from a recent road project and will probably use them to build this frame as a beater/polo bike.

    Thanks for the interest.
