That's a really nicely written article.
There are a few internet articles about DIY messenger bags, but that is about the best i've seen.
I thoroughly recommend giving it a shot if you're interested...nothing beats the feeling of making something yourself from scratch. -

OTP FT MF W!!
Just kidding Scott. You're right, but I'd buy from an expert artisan, and not bother wasting my time at making a crap product.

Expert Artisans have to start somewhere....my earliest prototypes weren't like my current bags.
Sometimes it takes messing about with bits of fabric to get people who might actually have some really good ideas to bring them to fruition and sometimes change the course of their whole lives. -

if you go to the lieflabs flickr page, he has made a sideloading back pack which is a really interesting idea. scott check it if you haven't seen it already, it's slightly flawed but a good concept.

Have you seen these...http://www.griffin-studio.com/shop/section.php?xSec=73
Bagaboo messenger bags designed by Griffin. Not cheap but they look great, very different to what is out there at the moment.

Personally I would only ever buy Pac or Archies grobags, both have the best build quality out there IMO.

Which bit exactly is very different?
Dessert camo is a standard cordura...the webbing pouch attachment strapping is an Army standard too which rickshaw used on the sides of their technical messenger bag where it makes much more sense than on the bag flap of the griffen/bagaboo.
Just my opinions of course. -

I've had a Timbuk2 since '97 - thats 12 years odd now - I made a deal with the bike shop owner to get it cheaper - I said i'd tell everyone at school to buy one if he gave me a tenner off - He did...- i think i paid £55 for it... perhaps because he knew i spent every bit of money i had in his shop...
Anyway - I've used and used and used and used this bag literally day in day out- (It's a small size - oversized A4 size in black and grey) it's not so much as let go of a single thread- it rules - and the nice long straps allow oversized stuff to strap on pretty easy....
Anyway - i'm here cos I'm looking for a new bag, a larger bag- but don't want another Timbuk2 really - they have become pretty common now.
I'm thinking either join the queue for an Archie's or get a bagaboo...
IMO - buying a cheap bag is a false investment, like many things...
Right - glad i got that off my chest...
Thanks to GA2G for the list... Awesome.

70 manufacturers to choose from, and only about 5 at the tippy-top of the tree.
Can't go wrong with Scott's work, but the world is your clamfood.
EDIT: jeanmi, my timbuk2 cost 100 quid, and is now 17 years old, I think. It still goes everywhere with me.

I found this list and thought I had a bag shopping bonanza, but I find my time wasted and wonder why. I googled and thought this being a "cool" site would have a few worthy suggestions, and there are among the posts. But the list itself is made up of fashionable bags and poorly made gimmick bags (like that ridiculous tire purse).
I'm specifically looking for actual messenger bags, the sort used by actual messengers. If you have a URL I'd appreciate it. Most of what is here is tote and carry-alls that use the descriptive to indicate a strap that hangs on the shoulder, but they are not designed for riding at all. I'm planning to relieve myself of my car and want to equip myself properly. I'd also like to avoid poorly made imitations from beginners if possible, hence the request at companies actually frequented by couriers.
I must admit I was a little surprised at what your forum thought comprised a messenger bag, but I see above the objective is to have as many listings as possible. A link to bags messengers use would be very useful indeed for those of us put here by Google or Yahoo.. I found a few posting suggestions useful, such as PAC bags, clearly a courier bag company. Thank you for that.

Shop 14 or you can wait a fair amount of time and get one direct from Scott. Or send a PM to fred on here, he might be selling one.
http://leiflabs.blogspot.com/ just came across this- if you read down the blog a bit it has complete instructions on how to make your own messenger bag from scratch, definitely an interesting read.
Just out of curiosity I'd like to know what you make of it Scott?
