I reckon Ortofon are def one of market leaders, but I'm coming from a dj point of view - not that I've mixed vinyl for a few years! I'm sure you've checked out here http://www.ortofon.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=190&Itemid=57 the three types create different depths and warmths of sound as the moving parts work in a different way, bit like a microphone. I'm getting a bit geeky here now so I'll shut up....
