  • I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere in or near London that does re-chroming for not too much £££?

I wouldn't mind getting my forks and rear dropouts redone. If the price was right maybe they could do the whole frame as well... yummm... And I just got meself a lovely old CInelli track stem which they could drop in the vat while they're at it (note my complete ignorance of the chroming process...!)

  • pretty sure that bikefix on lamb's conduit st. do it

  • There's an electroplating place near my place, but everytime i go there, it's locked :(. I'll give them a call on monday, and report back to here.

  • Witcomb Cycles do rechroming when they do restorations. Speak to Barrie, he could probably sort it out for you or give you some contact details.

  • I've always found prices at Witcomb to be very reasonable too.

  • I just phoned that local place, and apparently one of their walls collapsed, so they have had to close down their business for a while...
No matter, i did some phoning around today and one place in NW london gave me a phone-quote of £40 for the whole fork, which sounds kind of reasonable (considering Mercian charge £85). That is, if the paint is already stripped. And if they charge £40 for the fork, i can't imagine both dropouts being too pricey, either!

Has anybody stripped a frame of its paint before? Anybody recommend any stripping brands?

  • bump bump bump,

anyone know the names of these places and if they're still in business??

    biff

  • Premier Plating Works does it. there is also a trading estate near brockley that does chrome and copper. very good outfit!
forks will set you back £60

  • Whitcomb- mentioned earlier in the thread- send their stuff to a bloke in Liverpool to be chromed.

I know that is not very helpful, just thought I'd mention it.

  • How reasonable is Bob Jackson's charge of 110 for 12" of the fork and stays?

  • thanks guys,

just fired a mail off to whitcomb. See what they say. I'll let you know

  • These recommended by my frame painter:

An assumption that might be wrong, is that if you go to a shop they will add a percentage on to the price the chrome outfit charges, so better to go direct.

  • Fiddy- have you had a chance to speak to Colourtech?

  • PM'd

  • FWIW, when I did the Dave Yates course, he warned me to be very careful of chroming. There are enough acidic cleaning and surface prep agents used that if they're not removed very thoroughly the steel will corrode through horribly under the plating. He has a couple of example forks from restoration jobs showing signs of this and I would not wish to ride on them one little bit.

The exec summary is this: be very sure the place you use is very well used to plating thin, structurally important objects made of steels that corrode easily. If it's a sideline for them, they may well fuck it up with consequences for your face even if the finish looks lovely.

thank for the link, need to get my Titan track stem re-chroming.

  • theres a guy on hackney road that said he could chrome a bike frame, but i never went back to get it done so i can't tell you if he's any good. his yards in Hassard street, at the bottom on the left.

  • anyone fancy chroming their gun? londonchroming.co.uk

  • @ lpg - nitromorx?? (not sure spelling) in large amounts, let it settle, scrape it off, lugwork will be an issue and take some time - do this all outdoors and make sure it don't get it on your skin in your eye's. Just get armourtex to sandblast it though??

  • I've used Hockley Enterpises in the past for re-chroming of bmx and beach buggy parts - really good service and quality - reasonable prices too...

+1 for Nitromors paint stripper too - great stuff, but use gloves or have a bucket of water on stand by! ;-)

  • london chroming on the old kent road. i'm going there tomorrow.

  • hockley enterprises do forks for £25, and a frame for around £90

  • I just phoned London Chrome who quoted me £55 for a handlebar, £45 for a fork and £25 for a stem!!!

the parts are Cinelli Model 14 pista bars - I have 2 of these
Old style 'Cinelli Milano' track stem
Francesco Moser Track forks, super tight clearance on 20mm tyres, undrilled

At £180 is it worth it? I mean they are vintage parts and should be kept for posterity, but the horror, the horror.

Anyone know/used anyone else in London?
