  • asseson..have you broken an SL? or another model?

  • i love my quattros

  • they break (i've been through 3 sets in 2 years) but they look nice , not like a stealth bomber on acid (ATAC)

    they *look nice?

    *FFS, it's a pedal!

I'd rather something that didn't break, frankly.

  • once again, the steel ones don't break. but people buy the plastic ones..

  • I only have had the steel original ones , the bit that fucked up is, the thread holding the bearing. I have had 1000's of miles on them and they still work but start clicking and it gets annoying.

    FFS, it's a pedal!

I know, but its all part of the degenerative obsessive disease called bicycles, but you'll be saying chain ring bolts don't matter next!

  • Lol

  • it's funny because it's true

  • i've just bought some Aliums, as i'm keen to try them after all the recommendations. however, they've just arrived, and what i hadn't expected was that they weigh 3/4 of a ton.

i'll give them a go later.

  • all proper pedals are heavy.

  • the look ones aren't..

  • Time road pedals are light. ATACs are sturdy. If you need to claw back the 150g or so between them and bog standard Looks, take your cycling cap off or something.

  • I just put some Aliums on this morning as my first clipless pedals and loving them. Alot more movement allowed than I thought there would be on clipless pedals and a really solid clunk getting into them and for £15 in used condition with brand new cleats. Glad I took the plunge.

  • the look ones aren't..

I had some carbon Looks, they really weren't *that *much lighter than aliums!

road pedals are big old jobbies, like Bring says, go take a crap without your hat on or something

  • well, i just had a quick spin on them, and they seem nice. although i was ahppy enough with egg-beaters, i had been feeling that something with a bigger platform and less floaty feeling would be good for the kind of riding i'm doing now - as it's all country lanes etc, i only have to stop or put my feet down maybe once an hour if that. i also considered some full on road pedals.

i think egg-beaters are great for city-riding, when you might have to whip your foot out get going again every few minutes, but they aren't the most comfortable for longer rides.

be interesting to see how i get on with the ATACS.

  • SPD
    SPD-SL
    and.. I like Microsoft.

  • single sided spds/flat pedals. dont look bad in real life either. i think someone was looking for something like this recently...

  • Trying to decide which pedals I should go for, the shoes I'm currently looking at are "SPD-SL and Look(R) cleat compatible". This means that they're compatible with Time Atac cleats and pedals, or have I got it wrong?

Have been using toeclips and straps and think it's time to graduate to clipless.

  • Not wanting to start a new thread, but..

I'm thinking about trying out SPD-SL's on fixed, maybe to start using it on my Planet X, but how are they brakeless? I'm a bit scared of the plastic cleats breaking.. Also don't know if I'll risk pulling out of the pedal.

    Anyone done brakeless cityriding/skid/skipping on SPD-SL's ?

    • Might seem weird to London'ers, but Copenhagen has nice bikelanes and I rarely need to put a foot down
  • I've been using them and they're fine, you get better power transfer as the pedal body is larger. I've got the yellow cleats (float) and they never come out, moving to the reds (fixed) but doubt they'll be any problems if set-up correctly.

In a sentence; GO FOR IT!

  • I think I'll test it out on my steel bike before fitting them on my carbon :) thanks for the help.

Oh, and yes to the power transfer, just did first ride in a long time on my roadbike with SL's yesterday and that felt really nice.. have an extra set of pedals (the cheap Ultegra-ones).. So :)

  • I've got old Look 4x4 (basically SL Eggbeaters) on my (geared) utility bike, and quattro Ti's on my fixed.

The Eggbeaters are nice to clip in and out of, nice to spin the cranks at speed with, and dont get clogged with snow, mud etc. But the quattros give soooo much more power transfer, no hot spots, and the platform really makes a difference stomping up hills.

I've used the eggbeater cleats with the quattros and the quattro cleats with the eggbeaters in the past and both work OK.

Eggbeater cleats + quattro pedals = doesnt feel like a firm enough connection for fixed riding (IMHO).
Quattro cleats + eggbeaters = Felt really nice, if you like a firm connection, but hard to click out of.*

When I get back to building my MTB, I'll be putting candys on it. Cranks Bros are far from the best pedal manufactures. But the fact that all their pedals use the same mechanism is really useful.

(*Safety warning: Used this combo in the winter, and the quattro cleats filled with road slush which then frooze solid. If the plastic cleat mount had'nt of snapped when I came off I think my ankle might have. Not recommended for winter use)

  • How about the Shimano M520s? Are they any good? Pls advice.

  • See that Search field up the top? Put M520 in it..

  • woops, sorry. got it, thanks.
