    Depends on how long they last really.
    It uses far more materials and energy to make all those parts into a complete bag....it has brand new vinyl (printed),new webbing, strap pad, buckles, edging etc...then there's all the materials, time, and money required to promote the bags....they then need to be delivered to all the stockists in lorries...price tags made and stuck on...handed over to the customer in a nice carrier bag.
    Then if the bag starts to split, tear, break down more quickly, or just doesn't perform as well as the customer hoped, they'll then go out and get themselves something that was designed and built to last a lot longer and be more comfortable, and that one will most likely end up binned.

    So yeah, the 'good for the environment' bit isn't as straight forward as just recycling some old tyres.
    Cynical i know, but i'm in a glass half empty mood today...not that i could afford a glass! :)
