Some of y'all have already received PMs from me (especially Kowalski - sorry!) but I just wanted to make sure I was choosing the right bottom bracket spindle length once and for all. That way I get peace of mind and others out there with the same dilemma get this issue to look back on/search for.
So, I've got Royce track hubs that I want to build up. I'm not sure what chainline they give exactly but I'm gonna guess it's 43mm and not the Goldtec 45mm. I want to use Sugino 75 cranks but I can't figure out what spindle length to go for regarding bottom brackets.
I've pretty much made up my mind and would like a Phil bottom bracket but I've been told by some peeps to go for the 108mm and others to go for the 110.5mm version. I've looked in the transmissions database and, although incredibly helpful, I just can't work it out. The database tells me:
Sugino 75 + Miche + Royce + EAI = kowalski
Sugino 75 + Phil (110.5) + Phil + EAI Superstar = Object
Sugino 75 + Phil (110.5) + Goldtech + Phil Wood = Dancing James
Sugino 75 + Campag Centaur 111mm + Phil Wood + Phil Wood= adoubletap
Sugino 75 + Campag Centaur 111mm + goldtec + eai = dogsballs
Sugino 75 + Sugino 75 + Phil Wood + EAI = mr_tom
So...
Kowalski's using a Miche which is 107mm so I'm thinking a 108mm Phil should work but then Object's using a 110.5mm Phil with a Phil hub (I'm presuming Royce's chainline is similar to Phil's). mr_tom's using a Sugino 75 (109mm) with a Phil hub but then adoubletap is using a 111mm Campag Centaur. The Goldtec combos aren't relevant, I know, but I included them to highlight why I'm so confused. Unless Phil hubs and Goldtec hubs do actually have the same chainlines....do they??
Is it safe to assume that if the hubs have a 43mm chainline to go for the 108 Phil and if it's Goldtec to go for the 110.5? Or should I go for the 110.5 regardless? They're both adjustable so does it even matter?
I can't believe I'm getting so fncking confused about chainlines!
