Really down to your natural riding style isn't it? I don't get on with anything above 70, currently running 59 on a Singlespeed but that is because it is mainly for offroad. Can still cruise along at 17mph even with that gear but admittedly it would do my head in if I had to ride on the road with it.
But for me, I would much rather use 59 than 87 so there is clearly no right answer.
