even the blokes ride em, like brad pitt and david beckham.

Funnily enough they most likely live near the beach.

The people who ride them tend not to be serious cyclists. For short, infrequent journeys they are comfortable, reliable and convenient.

I know what you mean, but Id expect them to get some flash custom/boutique job. Not the really rough mass produced ones.

There is no shortage of Smaller American companies making really nice cruiser/utility/commuting bikes. But the celebs seem to always be on the cheap & nasty most impractical sort.

But 'convenient' includes instant and cheap availability. Assuming you were prepared to wait 6 months to a year for your $2000 boutique beach cruiser, you'd then have to carry it around with you instead of just picking one up from the local shop wherever you happened to be.
