A rat bike is a beat up generally old, rusty, piece of crap/something you dont mind chaining to a fence in hackney type of bike. Rat bike porn, is kick-ass bikes that have been ridden hard, and are generally pretty chipped/taped up, but still look and perform great.

I don't usually comment on bike porn, each to their own and what not, one man's amazing is another man's fugly.
But I like bikes that are used. Pristine bikes though lovely to look at don't feel right, because they are - to my mind - not being used for their purpose. They sit waiting for a sunny sunday when they can be wheeled out and shown off.
Ratbikes fall into the used catergory, but the used nature is played up, so put expensive bits on a shitty looking frame and you hide the quality of the build because its not pristine, to the layman/woman, its just a shitty looking old bike, but they don't realise its got dura ace hubs or a nitto stem, or c record cranks, that sort of thing. Only the passing afficionado recognises the true quality of the parts, which to me anyway is what ratbike porn is about.

I prefer the patina of things that are used, worn. I enjoy having something for a long time, and knowing where all the bumps and scratches have come from. I enjoy having a bike for long enough that I no longer feel precious about it, that I just use it and enjoy using it for the purpose it was designed for.

But if someone's got a pristine Lynskey going in a 56, I'll take it off your hands...
