Dura Ace Wheelset for Commute?

Posted on
  • Hi all,

I commute to work currently on my geared bike, but want to use the fixed now. Ive recently got a brand new set of campag rims laced to dura ace hubs, with 20mm michelin lithium (iirc) tyres.

I pressume they will hold up ok on a 30 mile daily commute, along oxford street and the edgware road, but wanted to check if anyone else uses a similar set for daily use as well as on the track?

  • your missus looks pleased as punch...
    a) is she happy you have a new bike and she won't see you much?
    b) is she happy that you've finally put the thing together and she will get to see you?
    c) she ain;t you missus but your mum and mum's are always happy

of course they'll be fine - but a good test is that if you are worried then buy a cheap set. done.

  • C) LOL thats not my missus, its my mum!

Ill take the bike in, in a few days once the lockrings fitted.

  • what rims are they?

  • Nice wheels. Im sure they are up to it but if I had a seperate track bike with nice bits like that I wouldnt want to wear it out. Id want to keep my 'track' wheels separate & in finely tuned condition not needing fiddly maintenance.

  • I've got a new set of the hubs, they come with the seals in a separate packet, so I'd be sure to install them for a commute.

  • Geekfact: The rims are Campag Omega V

  • I have an ofmega it doesnt have the yellow bit though.

  • 30 miles is quite a daily commute. nothing says you cant use those hubs, Tynan amongst others used/uses them i think all the time. I myself commute around 18miles on a lf DA hub on the front with no problems, aslong as i regrease often. thats the key i think, regreasing often.

  • been using da's for 4 years now and they have never missed a beat
they get hopped up and down kerbs
ridden around londons famous london and never had an issue

  • Campag rims have been known to explode violently when laced to Shimano hubs. Beware.

  • Just don't leave it locked up in the street and change the bearings once a year.

  • that'd be one harsh riding commuter. alu frame and race tyres.

  • it's got carbon forks

  • cheap alloy steerer ones, still very harsh for lots of commuting

  • nah they're not

  • I have an ofmega it doesnt have the yellow bit though.

    'Omega'.

My hardox (black) one had a yellow sticker. My silver one didn't.

  • Harsh? HTFU

  • How is BREAKing in the wet on those rims?
