Is it bad that I read the first two paragraphs wondering if his bike was alright?

When I was a yoot one of the kids at my college was cycling back after work late one night and hit a hole in the road that had been dug out for roadworks. It fucked his face up and ripped his nose off. Horrific. A year later he was alright and though you could see grey lines round his new nose he looked okay. but he went down the pub where everyone hung on the friday after it happened and people were pretty much heaving into their pints.
That's what I thought about when I started reading this..

According to figures produced by the Asphalt Industry Alliance for its 2008 Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey, local councils in England and Wales spent £52.3million repairing 853,614 potholes - a cost of £61.27 per pothole. In contrast, £53million was paid out by local authorities in compensation to road users as a result of poor road condition.
In England alone, 89 per cent of local authorities who took part in the ALARM survey "believe there is a threat to road users' safety due to road maintenance under-funding". In Wales this figure was 100 per cent. Road repair budget shortfall has been estimated to be in excess of £1billion nationwide.
Cost of doing the job right : £1,000,000,000
Cost of doing the job really badly: £105,300,000 (inc some repairs + legal compensation)Saving from doing the job badly: £894,700,000
Likelihood of anything changing as a result of compensation payouts? Zilch.

Out of curiousity - how unbiased is that study? Coming from the Asphalt Industry Alliance I would imagine that there is a small slant to that in favour of using more asphalt.

There's an absolute waxer of a hole on the long drag up towards hyde park corner in Leeds. Looks like some kind of small manhole minus lid. Might be worth a go if any Leeds heads are desperate for cash.

I am not sure that cash comes flying out the pothole as soon as you crash into it.

Jeez, have you seen that beast on Rosebery Ave where it crosses Farringdon Road? Someone's going to lose a bus in that one day.

This seems an appropriate place to ask what is probably a dumb question but here goes, I just hit a massive pothole on my way to work and its dented my wheel and bent a spoke. The pothole is next to some roadworks which I'm pretty sure weren't there yesterday and the pothole is definitely new so I'm assuming it is connected with the people doing the work. Now I know that the damage is probably fixable by someone who knows what they're doing but is there any kind of avenue for complaints with the hope of getting the council/whoever is responsible for the work to pay for the repair/a new wheel?? I'm going to take a picture on my way home later but this pothole was probably bigger than most kitchen sinks!

Contact your local authority's Highways Department to find out which utility company was responsible for the work - or even if the authority itself or the Highways Agency was...
